I thought it would be best to ask on this discussion because I have not been officially diagnosed although I suspect I am pretty close. But I was watching Dr Oz and he said if one gains weight on the waist, over 35 inches they are at a risk o diabetes. Now I have begun loosing weight and here is the problem. It came off on my legs, they look almost like those of skinny ladies. My ring is no longer tight on my finger, my chin is wrinkling, so I have to use lanolin cream on it to keep it from wrinkling. Not only that, I lost on my hips so instead of being ten inches less, they are about 9 inches less then my wast, but so far my waist is stuck between 38 and a half and 39 and even though I lost five pounds it has not moved down further.
I mean I read about losing weight but I feel that I will turn into a skinny lady with a big bulge in front of my waist that cannot move. So all the lectures do not seem to help nor all the guilt that I people put on me thinking I am not dong enough.
I wonder if there is others with this problem and if there is a solution? I am cutting down on yeast, sugar, etc. and eating more sal stuff.

I think that the hardest place to lose weight in the waist. This is because it is the last place that will lose weight. Once the other parts of your body lose the fat, it will start losing on the waist. Plus at the gym you should concentrate on doing exercises that work the stomach. It will tone it up and help reduce the fat. Diabetes itself is more likely to be hereditary. Therefore if your family dont have it, make sure exercise and eat healthy and you should hopefully be ok. Good luck!

Actually type I Diabetes is more genetic in cause. Type II is influenced by diet and exercise, so she is on a good track.

First, I don't put a lot of stock in Dr. Oz anymore. He's become a commercialized doctor. I will say that there is stock in what he says about the waistline but as he cannot give true diagnosis he can only speak in generalities. It would violate his credentials to diagnosis on the air or in front of other people.
The best way to work down the "belly fat" is to make sure you are doing full muscle toning and not just your standard "crunch". You need to exercise and tone your back muscles as well as your obliques. It is what is called "core training" when you are training your core muscles that help in every facet of your life.
You can do a great many of these exercises using a training ball (available even at Wal-mart) and light weights. You can also get the same training in yoga. If you are up for it take up belly dancing. Belly dancing itself uses every single muscle group and works your core muscles every time you dance. A lot of park districts and such are now starting to offer belly dancing classes for a reasonable rate. Or you can simply check out dvd's from your local library.
Lots of luck!

I find a lot of Dr. Oz's suggestions you have to have money to go through them. I think a lot of the nutrition suggestions make sense, but nothing about getting plastic surgery, etc. My abdominal muscles got cut through a D& C. That is before they had the method they have nowadays when they go through the bottom up between one's legs. I know one or two Pilate Exercises, and have not gotten a Medical Ball yet.
I know one Pilate exercise, but cannot hold it for the three minutes they suggest (or is it 4 minutes, not sure). I can hold it for two minutes and that is about all. The trouble is that the ladies who demonstrate it are already skinny and really do not need to do it. I do wonder if you have to do a large financial outcome before getting the Pilates? I can see a mat and I have dumb bells but that is all.

Masihi-
Pilates is very good! I've had friends who have done it for years and noticed almost immeadiate results (not day one but in a short period of time). I think, if I'm not mistaken, most gyms such as LA Fitness, Anytime, Curves offer Pilates classes. You could also check into your local city organizations to see if anyone is teaching classes. I have a video by an Australian woman that I picked up years ago at Wal-mart that I do from time to time that is a Pilates based yoga. It's very easy, comfortable and does have results. I should pull that video back out lol. As you can tell I too have tried lots of things to shape my tummy.
One of the things that I have been told by a plastic surgeon is that if you have had a lot of children it is possible that the abdominal muscles have torn and need to be repaired surgically. They advise losing all your weight that you plan to lose before surgery. They also stated you need 6 weeks recovery time of absolutely no lifting, no heavy work, etc. (Just as another option for those who have tried everything else).

I developed a "gut" that will not go away either. I am losing a little weight. I keep reading all these different ideas, but I believe that what you have outlined, eating more veggies and fewer breads and starches may be the key, as well as exercise. I know I do not get enough exercise. I have also heard to add more fiber. I bake most of my bread, and I put extra wheat germ and flax seed meal in it, and it is a high protein type of bread. It takes a while for things to change, I know. Congratulations on the progress you are making.

I got a Reverse Diabetes cookbook and they suggest Sprouted Grain Bread, I also have trouble with yeast as well. It is just that I wish I did not gain my weight in the middle. My dad had Type 2 diabetes, and not only did he have trouble losing weight, he loved cabbages, and the like and they are supposed to be good for people with diabetes, but the trouble was that he was allergic to them and he had to take an allergy pill before having them.
My daughter-in-law, the first one, is allergic to carrots, celery, parsley etc. Type II diabetes runs in her family and she might likely get it when she gets middle-aged, but she will have ti worse because she has less things to choose from.
Maybe if there were not guilt associated - yes and I have a friend who is overweight, larger then me, but she does not have it, and I have a friend like me who is smaller, not fat, and she has trouble with high sugar. So sometimes you do not need to be a pig to get it.

You are not a pig, you like healthy foods. It is just hard to make it go away once it has gotten settled in. One type of bread that I have seen is called Ezekiel bread and we can get it at one of our grocery stores. I believe it is sprouted grain bread.

Up here we can get Owowheat. They have two kinds of healthy bread, the sprouted one and the one mad with no yeast. The trouble is because I keep getting trouble down there, I have to eat sprouted grain bread with no yeast but they do not have a combined one. I wish they would start one, but so far have not found any.

I am looking into it, and just doing crunches will not do it. Maybe lifting up things very heavy and moving the furniture should work. I heard that losing the stomach fat is the hardest to do. I have to wait until I get my Blue Cross deducted from my Survivor Pension and also Blue Cross is sending us prescription Payment cards in January so we only pay our part of it instead of paying the whole shot and waiting for the deductions. I have those female problems and may need a prescription for tthat. Trouble is there are few doctors available, that is family doctors. And all the specialists are getting swamped.

I do not want to go to my doctor. He is a pill pusher and besides he would likely put all the blame on me. So I am trying to find a homeopathic doctor or at least someone who says that it is my fault (could not choose my parents). I have no trouble with crunches, but have to do a lot of them. I do take walks and do lift weights, but the only places I lose is my face and mg legs and arms.

I am having a similar issue. My stomach seems big to me, while most of the rest of me seems normalish. I bought those Shape-up shoes hoping for a miracle. It didn't happen. I bought Dr Oz's Reinvent/Sculpting pills, no change. I need to either find another way to tone up and lose weight or give up.
My friend at work is dating a personal trainer and says that he says I need to strengthen and tone my abs and back muscles. He is recommending a maneuver called "Plank". It is really hard to do if you are doing it correctly!
This is the best explanation page I have found:

Thanks because I was at the store the other day and was looking into Balls and seeing what kind to get. They have the large ones that you wrap yourself over and the others that you hold in your hands. I guess you are talking about the large ones.

Trace-
Make the investment in a Wii Fit and buy the Wii Fit plus. It has yoga as a part of its system and with the plank will tell you how to correct your posture so that you are doing it correctly. And yes, it will be hard. Even using that program they build you up because no one in yoga teaches the plank as your first yoga move, most people are not strong enough to do it. Good luck!

They make stabilizers for the balls. You simply put the ball into the floor mount and it won't roll.

You can only loose so much weight before you begin to tap into your muscles. I think the program you are on is just fine. If you want to loose weight in your stomach then do some stomach exercises to help reduce that area. Walking also helps to loose so extra weight because it speeds up your heart rate.

I do a lot of walking and that is where I lose the most weight. I am muscular, but I want to lose the weight around my belly. I have this big roll and it just stays there. And then I learn "those who have this belly fat are more likely to get diabetes, die young, get amputated, etc. and I remember my dad that he started to have problems when he was in the War and by the photos I have of him, he was not overweight then.
And cataracts run in my family like diabetes, so if I have to have a corona transplant when I am in my 80s, will I get told, "It is because you have Type 2 diabetes and if you had watched your weight?"

What are the ingredients in this bottle. To me it look like he is selling this product and the other advise is jut window dressing. I will look into it. If it is a natural sugar substitute and the recipes are how to use them in a belly reducing and metobolic syndrome diet, I would be interested.

Thanks. I wish it came off the right part, my belly, and I wish I did not have to have the D&C and have y muslces cut o that I would gain that weight there and I wish diabetes did not run in my family, and I wish my family did not think that some vegetables were too expensive too eat.

Have you cut down on salt? You'd be surprised how much salt is in the foods we eat. We have "Healthy Choice" frozen dinners here that are low fat and low calorie but are loaded with salt, as much as you're supposed to have in one day--in one meal! Salt makes you retain water and makes your heart work harder.
When I cut down on salt I lost weight everywhere. If you haven't done it yet you might try it. Look at the labels on your food to see the salt (sodium) content!

I like the Weight WAtchers Smart Ones but only have them on Sundays and I do not use salt, I do check the labels, but mostly for the sugar content. But really do you think that cutting down on salt is going to make my belly fat disappear? I can see cutting down on sugar and simple carbs as they make the fat go where it is not supposed to, but cutting down salt even for someone like me who does not use that much on a large scale.
In other words, cutting down the salt did not help me as I did not consider water weight loss, but only the fat weight.

I am type 2 diabetic and have been losing weight through no effort of my own. I think it's the diabetes. I don't have it under very good control.
As I started to lose weight I asked my doc about the fact that I was losing everywhere except my stomach. He said that as we age there is a different distribution of fat. It generally does go and stay in the stomach area. I don't know how old you are but that might be a factor. It is harder to lose stomach fat than any other, but you already know that :)
I am sad to say that I have become one of those women that has thinner legs and a pooched out belly :( I always hoped that that would never happen to me, but it did. I guess it is just a body type and I'm stuck with it. So far I don't know how to rid myself of it. Good luck to you.

I'm in my mid sixities and my father had diabetes. Luckily I have a muscular build but I am also large boned. I never had a small waist nor a small hip . I have been very careful in dieting and I had to work had to lose weight. It did not come off that easily. So does that mean that automatically because the only time I had a below 30 inch waist was when I was a teenager, that all large boned people will get type 2 diabetes when they reach middle age? It seems like it.

I am quite hippy. My husband was medium boned, and he could not understand that in order for me to get down in size consideranbly, one would have to put me under, remove the outer area of my skin and muscles and grind down my bones to get down to medium sized, and replace my skin and muscles again. Yet when I look in the mirror, I do not look obese.
Hope I did not scare you but being a writer and having a weird imagination -

I don't know. I'm small boned and haven't seen a 30 in. waist since I was in my 20's. I don't have any hips or behind either. I lose everything there and keep it in my waist. I have decided not to let it bother me too much. I have a big enough problem trying to get my BS under control. I hope that as I lose weight it will all work it's self out. If I reach a healthy weight and get my BS under control I won't let a little bit of a belly bother me. As long as I'm healthy... and that's the big problem right now.
