You are right. QQ is the most popular chatting software in China and many people like to use it. I have to say that QQ offers many good features. Such as cutting the image from the monitor, transferring files offline and so on. However, I don't really like to use it because I found it will slow down my computer. And there are many strangers will bother you when you are online. So usually I prefer to use MSN.
I love China

mars06,
Undeniably, Tencent QQ is by far the most popular internet chat client in China and it is not surprising considering the time it has been around.
Besides, it is a very much Chinese and China oriented software program. However, I can see that the younger generations and educated majority preferring other chat clients than QQ where it is being regarded as too money oriented and inflexible with their add on applications. For example, Yahoo provides free short text messaging service to certain countries' mobile phone networks.
Last but not least, it is customary that Chinese will always support Chinese so I believe this to be partly responsible for QQ's popularity in the Chinese community.
Compliments of the season.
