Ok this Discussion was triggered by a Photo I have just seen
I love Plants and I do have a few here but the one that I detest and have not been near since I was 11 is a Cactus
I will not go near them, the reason .................?
Well my Stepfather loved his Cactus's he had loads of them, he looked after them well and was always cleaning them and nurturing them
Well this one afternoon just before Christmas he was with his Plants, I remember being in a bit of a stroppy Mood because my Brother had done something, blamed me and I got into trouble for it, so I went in the Living room and sat in the Chair to keep out of my Mum's way (and Brothers for that matter as I was already planning how to get him back) well I was out of that Chair quicker then you could have said ok, I was dancing about, crying and saying Au Au Au
Yep I had sat on one of the Cactus's and it had to be the big one and by god did it hurt
Everyone asked what the heck was wrong, my Brother had noticed and laughed at me ( he was one evil little git at times) when eventually my Stepdad looked at the Chair, he realised what had happened, he just said "She has sat on my bl**dy Cactus" he went to sort the Cactus and see what he can rescue, I am still dancing about not being able to touch my Butt as I still had the Needles in there.
Now I was only 11 but my words after 5 minutes of putting up with my Brother laughing and the Pain I shouted "Is someone going to take this F****** out of my Butt" As soon as I said my Brother shouts, Gaby swore, he actually got told for once to button it, when my Mum realised I still had the needles in my Butt, she told my Stepfather (who was a Medic in the Army by the way) could he stop fussing over the Plant and help her sort me out
Wow did it hurt when they pulled the needles out
Needles to say I had to sit on a soft Cushion for a while, the Pain lasted a few Days believe me
The Plant was saved (before me) and I was told to watch where I am sitting in future well I found that strange as normally People sit on the Seats not stupid Cactus's
Oh I got my revenge on my Brother to hehehehe those Pea shooters where awesome
So, do you blame me for not liking Cactus's ???????????????
I know I don't

No I don't blame you and what a story, wow...I also agree with you, why was that cactus even on a chair in the first place? I don't know much about this plant, but if I am transplanting or removing them, they go on a counter, not the furniture..

I don't know what sort of cactus looks like a small palm tree. Are you talking about Yucca, Aeonium or Pachypodium, none of which are cacti?

I wouldn't want to be around a stinking cactus after that either. Ypu would think that sitting in a chair would be a bit safer than that. I think it would have been hard to blame a child for sitting on it when it wasn't where it was supposed to be anyway. I have had a cactus stick ot two..nothing like that..but it does hurt for a couple of days. Sometimes it's almost impossible to get all those little things out.

What a funny story, Gabs. No, I'm not particularly fond of cactus either and I live in the desert. I have 5 acres of plants and much of them cactus, but inside the fence around my house -- no cactus. I tore all of them out when I landscaped (I mostly have rock and wildflowers, wild bushes and a few native trees I planted.) I must admit though, when they bloom, they are very pretty. I have one barrel cactus on my property that has to be decades if not over a hundred years old. It stands over 5 feet tall. I noticed in the past couple of years, it seems to be leaning down the hill more. I will hate to see it falls over...

That was a funny story Gaby (but not for you). Why did your stepdad leave a cactus on a chair anyway? Silly sod. He was more concerned about his precious cactus than he was about you; it must have been very painful with all those needles stuck in your butt. I can't blame you for not liking cactus.
Personally, I quite like them (when they flower they are spectacular), and I've been contemplating making a cactus garden at home in what used to be a sandpit play area. Don't think little Poppy would approve though!

Hi Abbey
Well he had already been drinking and of course his precious Cactus's could not go on the Floor as he reckoned our Dog at the time would pee on it even though Prince never peed in the House
I like to look at them from a distance as you say they are beautiful when they are blooming but I just can not go near them
As for Poppy she told Gissi no way and can she move in with him if you do lol

Haha! I think Poppy might like to live with Gissi - but only for a little while, because she would miss her mum and dad too much! Wish we lived nearer - at least in the same country lol!
If I ever get my cactus garden finished, I will send you a pic Gaby - with Poppy sitting at the side of it, very wary of the cacti! Hugs to you both. xx

I'd say your stepda was an insensitive clod...
At least your ma realized you were more important than the cactus. That would have felt especially good (I'd think) after she had chewed you out moments earlier.
Did anyone ask what the cactus was doing on the chair in the first place?

hi gabs I did have my laugh reading your discussin. but cactus needles are not funny stuck in the butt or the back. my little daughter at four years of age fell backwards in to my hubbies cactus garden. It took me an hour to get all of the damned needles out as some were the flying cactus with three pads. the dog was graowling and barking at me, Lisa was crying and I wqas sweating. when I got through I made my husband dig them all out and get rid of them. With two tots at home there was no way I was goijg to have those around. I really developed a hatred for growing cactus in ones yard.

never got into one as ive been told about them, plus, been around them for years now. and yes, i hate them for sure. thats all you see mostly out here in the west. they are like weeds. you dont even have to deliberately raise them. your step dad would have loved the west if he liked them so much glad you got the brother back.

Oh, Gabs, what a story! I won't blame you for not liking any Cactus. In fact, I don't like them either. I mean, I'm ok when I see them, but I wouldn't care for such a plant. Why would I offer my love to somebody who doesn't want it? After all, cactus's want us to stay away, don't they?
I think your stepfather was mad about cactus's, he worried more about his plant than he worried about 11 years old girl who was her step daughter...

Hi gabs! Once again, quite the story! So, you hate catus do
you? lol I can understand completely. I never had a run in with
one, but I have had a tiny stick or two! Not much of a cactus
person myself. And wouldn't have them around Star & Luna anyway!
I feel badly for the way you were treated though. That definitely
could leave a child traumatized for life! I had enough trauma
myself and it had nothing to do with plants! Glad that you're ok
and promise never to send you a cactus as a gift, or any plant
for that matter!

Oh dear, ouch! I can’t believe your stepdad worried about his cactus before you! I know how much those needles hurt because when I was in Italy as a kid of about five I walked out onto our balcony, tripped over the step and ended up literally sitting on a cactus plant! Fortunately for me my parents actually came to my aid before checking if the cactus was okay. I remember crying my eyes out and lying across my mother’s knee as she not so gently pulled out the needles from my butt so, dear gabs I relate to your story one hundred per cent. I don’t know if our cactus pulled through but quite frankly I didn’t care!
