I would say this depends on what age is the particular child is.
For me, he is 4 years old turning 5 and yes, oftentimes he would ask this question.
I simply told him that Jesus gave him to us (his mom and dad) and Jesus puts him in my tummy so he will grow properly and that he needs mommy to take care of him.
So far this line of explanation is still acceptable to him, for now. I am also interested to know how it would have to be explained in an easier manner when he's a bit older. Say, like when he's 7 or 10. Oh my, that would then be more complicated than it is now.

My son is only 7 months old, but depending on his age I will just give him an age appropriate (but correct) response. Not PC mind you, but limited in explanation so he can understand. I don't believe saying things like "the stork brought you" are healthy for a child's trust in their parents. Kids are capable of understanding a lot more than you think they can.

My disabled toddler son is just three years old. If he asked how he was made I would explain that he was put into my tummy. At that time he was as tiny as a seed and then during time he grew to be a baby. Then he came out into world when I was at home on my sofa. Then I would explain that he was poorly so he went off to hospital in an ambulance. Now I would say that he is a little boy with a bright smile.
Sometimes my son asks why he can't walk. I say that he feet are twisted and his legs too week. The reason is spina bifida and he is too young to know about that. He might ask why he has a box in his head when he is older. That is because of his hydrocephalus. At the moment I have to make my answers to his question easy for him to understand.
