I don't know if this situation happened in real life. I seen in several movies a situation that a fregnant woman in the hospital, when there is a problem for delivery of child the doctor (I don't know if this is SOP of all hospital) approached the family (husband). The doctor tell the situation and the doctor approached the family that they should "SELECT" whether the MOTHER or the CHILD to be save. This is the first question - Is this necessary to ask the family to select whose to be save in such situation? This is the doctor responsibility to save both because he knows the situation.
Then the family has no choice, they choice THE MOTHER, then the doctor get the signature I think to the concern for such selection. But what if the situation reverse instead the mother (who select by the family) die and the child will alive, who is the responsible?

Yes. it is the hospital's SOP to ask the father whom he chooses to survive. Because in situation like this, Doctors has no power whom to save or not. Because at the first place, Doctors doesn't own the mother nor the baby. It is only the father who does. Another thing, so that the doctor will not have a hard time to think and just do whatever the client wants to.

Hi Dude, It is really good and worthy question. As far as i think it is only possible in the movies and television dramas. If anything had really happened or happening in the real time basis then the doctor is really not a good doctor. He must try to save both or else he have to seek help from other doctors. He can not decide anything from his/her own mind. It is my opinion. Bye and have a good day!!

Yea, I have come across this situation in a few Indian movies, and needless to say in most cases the mother will be recommended. As you, I too have never been informed of a real incident happened along such lines, which is actually something to be thankful for, since it is beyond speculation as to who should be saved first. And the doctor who, if any, asks such a question should be purged of his right to operate anymore.

I think it should be like that because the doctor ask permission or sellection to whom the family will save. Because doctor knows what to do and before he ask, he knows that ONLY one can survive but choices are there whom to give way.. right.. thanks see you around

Hi visavis, Sometimes even the best of doctors cannot save both the mother and the child. As I understand it here, it is the doctors responsibility to save the mother first. I have never heard of a situation where the doctor saved the baby and let the mother die. Blessings.

hio visavsis thats only in movies as in real life those things do not happen like that, and right the doctorworks to save both lives and sometimes he semi fails. I had worked in our A merican hospitals for years and those scenarios in the movies have no bearing on what happens in
real hospitals at all. The family is not made to chose at all.The doctor works to save both mom and baby, sometimes it stops in between and although mom and babe are both saved the baby is born with birth defects
and this is hard but mother love still wins out over birth defects and thus it goes.

Yeah, its quite weird reading this. Actually, I am a nurse and I never encountered a doctor telling a husband to choose between the wife or the baby. They tell though the situation. I think, the doctors I know do their best to save both the mother and the baby. Usually, mothers die due to postnatal complications like hemorrhage and infection.
