The equation for life

I was talking about philosophy with a friend and we both agreed that the broadest equation for life that we could give was life=the universe-death... We both laughed at it but at the same time we thought that indeed if you subtract the universe to death, you get life in a way... given that all living matter lies in the universe and that pretty much the whole universe is alive... what do you think your equation for life is?
