Do You Think Teachers are Paid Enough?

Simple enough question here. I would love to know why you think teachers either are or aren't paid enough for the services that they provide.
As for me, I really don't think that teachers are paid enough because I feel like they have one of the most important jobs in society. If it wasn't for teachers there would be no one that would be able to ensure the future success of those individuals that will eventually be the next doctors, lawyers and even teachers for the future generations of the world. I personally think that teachers should be just as high paid as doctors and lawyers because the service that they provide is just as important as the other two professions.

If you compare the kind of education that our parents had before, to our education and to our children's i think there is a large difference. The kind of education now that they are getting i think has less quality. And I would like to attribute this to the kind of teachers they have now. Teachers now are underpaid, and with that they are less motivated too. Of course in teaching it is not just all money but teachers are also human and they also have their own needs. They have family to feed. So what is happening now they are having other sidelines and they are not focus to what they are suppose to do.
I agree that they should be paid more because less and less qualified people would like to become teachers now. They would rather work in a bank, or other private companies because they can earn more from it.

Now I tend to think that the education that my daughter is getting is better than what I got. However, I think that part of it could have to do with the fact that she goes to a school that gets more government funding based on the population of students that are lower income. However, I still don't feel that the teachers are paid enough.

You can say that again. Sometimes I get to think if I am just a millionaire I will be the one to add up to the salaries of the teachers of my children too. and here in our country the president would still want to cut down on the education's budget. My gosh what's left for our future in that case? All good teachers will be flying abroad, there will be no one left here to teach for the children who will be left behind. That is why for us parents we also have to be proactive in giving our children education because we do not know the quality of education they have now in school. I can't blame the teachers too. Very sad right?

I do think that the participation of parents is important in a child's education, but there are some things that I really don't think I can handle myself.

Teachers ARE underpaid, but they're paid from a percentage of our taxes, and everyone already freaks out because of how much the US gov't takes out of our paychecks. I think that a better system should be in place.

I think people often misunderstand how revenue comes into a school district, and often that is the cause for panic when someone mentions a possible increase in "Property Tax". The following link is to the budget of the high school in the city which I reside. As you can see the total property tax itself isn't enough to pay more than one teacher, and we all know that there is more than one teacher in a high school. I would suggest that people pull up such budgets in the school district they live in order to see that their revenue does not all come from property tax. It's very small actually (when you compare it to the number of people who reside in that town).

Personally, I agree that we need a better system. We need to copy Norway's system and enter the future.

Teacher's aren't really federal employees, but their pay is somewhat subsidized by the federal government. However, in our state, a large part of the education budget comes from the revenue of our lottery. I know that a portion of the education budget in an adjoining state comes from their casino gambling. In fact, when we go to the casino in the other state we joke around that we are paying for the education of their children. So, as you can see, the pay for teachers isn't all from our taxes.

I still remember how my teacher teaches me in high school. I think she mould me in becoming a person who i am right now, my thinking is largely influenced by her which sometimes people who know me admire me the way I am. I just told them I had a great teacher when I was young. They are the second parents to me and hours spent in school is every gold I have in my whole life. I will never meet anyone like this anymore after I graduate. So they are definitely be paid much higher than it was. But when I realize these days, that quality teachers are less and lazy is there I feel they are not deserved to be paid higher. But mostly I feel teachers is a contributor to the society and they are a must to be rewarded.

I tend to think that if teachers were a little bit better paid then there would be more good teachers. I've seen that there are some wonderful teachers and others that are not so good and that really is a frustrating thing.

Hi doran,I would agree with you ! Teachers the worst paid amongst all the other workers esp here in India. Being a teacher I know about this and I am not sure why most people tend to think a teachers job is easy !It is stressful and added to that is the monetary discrepency which really is unfair..All the best and have a nice evening

What most people don't tend to understand is that a teacher's work doesn't end at home. They also have to take home work with them and because of the fact that at least here, teachers are salaried, when you break down what they are making per hour it really is a pitiance.

In my country, the teachers/civil servants, as what they are called in government terms, are paid very well for their contributions. They are also given a 13-month bonus. I think teachers and lecturers should be highly paid as doctors and lawyers. Teachers educate the children, help to mould them into useful people and this is indeed a great contribution. Considering the number of schools in my country being built, there are more and more educators and teachers being recruited and I think the teaching profession is becoming more and more popular.

Here teachers aren't really paid all that well. However, I have faith that it could change in the future. Teachers deserve more than what they are getting in terms of both salary and respect.

Teachers have to go through so much in the course of educating so many children. they can't satisfy everyone no matter how hard they try. I think they deserve more credit than they get. i am sure that teachers are not paid nearly enough for all that they do.

Teachers are not paid enough here in our country. It so sad since most of them tried to work on other countries that pays higher. I agree with you, they should be paid well since their job is really important plus it is unnerving. I really have high respects to teachers.

Most of the teachers I know here in our country are underpaid. That is really a sad thing. I know that their job is one of the most important profession. They mold a child to become a person and make them professionals. Without the teachers, there would be no professionals and there would be no development. Perhaps it about time that they should be given what is due them.

hi dorannmwin yes it really is and yes they should be paid as well as doctors, lawyers, and even those over paid basketball players. they can shape the future of our world by how they educate our children and a good teacher can inspire you to choose a career. but the poor teachers really should be weeded out as they do more harm than good.I have had some really great teachers from grade school thru junior college and U of Ca Irvine California. there I had some really great profs and one I wanted to punch out for embarrassing me by reading my paper out loud and making fun of my errors. that was so unnecessary and he knew it. he even apologized in a sort of slippery insincere way. but I had some in my poetry classes who were just great and so helpful.

I too had some great teachers and some that weren't so great. However, it was the great teachers that were really the ones that made an impact on me. Now that I have a child in school, I've seen nothing but good teachers for her. I only hope that through the rest of her schooling I will see the same thing.

You know, Katsmeow, you really hit the nail on the head. Indeed, most professions are OVERpaid. How much money does each of those professions actually warrant? Surely not what they're actually getting paid. Yet....that's grist for an entirely different discussion. lol.

No let's not bring the government into this! Obama is all for nationalising Health Care, which would mean doctors make about as much as teachers.. but then our taxes would sky rocket and our wait times at the ER would triple!
Also I don't believe in socialism. Which we're getting dangerously close to discussing here by saying doctors and lawyers should earn the same amount as teachers.
Honestly... okay, lawyers are fine, because they're paid based on the work they do and the clients they represent. There are cheap lawyers, and expensive lawyers. When you hire a lawyer you get what you pay for... nothing wrong with that.
Doctors are a bigger problem because their fees are coming out of our pockets and we don't have much of an option. Our options are go to an expensive hospital or a cheap clinic.. but depending on your needs that's not always an option either, clinics don't do surgeries.. and we can't opt not to pay for that $1,000 box of tissues we don't even use!
I don't know what the solution is.. but I know National Health Care is not the solution, and neither is socialism. If there's other options I can't think of them... and as Veromar said, that's for an entirely different discussion.

Teachers are paid pittance that is why only those who can not land a good job become teachers. There are very few dedicated teachers available and teachers are more often expected to do social service rather than make it a means of living. It is a shame how teachers are exploited and made to slog on meager salaries.

That is right, I do think, however, that there are some people that go into teaching for a general love of teaching. In fact, it is the love of children and of teaching my own children that has shown me that I would like to eventually go into the teaching field.

They are not paid much out here and they work so hard under sometimes difficult circumstances. My daughter gets a good pay as she is teaching at an International American school out here and is paid in US dollars. She has a small class too and the kids get individual attention so she is so happy.
When I was teaching I had a class of 65 students of mixed ability to teach English. It was a nightmare to give them any kind of attention. They knew that when I wrote 'see me'in their books it was not to tell them off but it was their duty to see me - before or after school as they had not grasped a particular concept. No time for individual attention during class time. And I was well organised. So hard though and very frustrating.

As outsiders, you may feel that teachers are unpaid. But to teachers, it depende on how they think about their job of teaching. If you are the ones who want to pursue much money, I think teaching job doesn't fit you, you will quit sooner or later.however if you would like to be a good teacher, you would contribute all your life to teaching career. No doubt you are human being firt who tend to need a better life.So it is diffult for people to have a perfect life.

Though it is difficult for people to have the perfect life. I'm speaking from the fact that I know a lot of teachers that have to take on second jobs just to pay their mortgage and have food on the table. A teacher's job demands a lot from them both in the classroom and outside the classroom and that is the main reason that I think they deserve more pay.

I used to think the teachers in my country are underpaid, but I've heard that the government has been increasing their salaries, and it seems quite well paid now. Also, there are many privileges and benefits being a teacher here. It seems like more and more people consider of becoming a teacher here, especially when they do not really like to work in those corporate world.

Teachers in our country being underpaid? Their salaries have been better since years ago. The unfortunate thing was that they wanted more for less work. That was the impression that I got when I was a teacher. The teachers in our country are relatively better off than teachers from one or two neighbouring countries. Among the proofs are the majority are able to own homes, big vehicles, send their kids to private tutors, and have holidays in different parts of the country or even the world.
Present day teachers in our country should be grateful for what they are receiving now, and prove that they are worth the money spent on them.

I am just a new teacher here in the Philippines. When I was in the private school , I can say that I was really underpaid. My salary is not enough even for me alone. I work so hard yet my work doesn't equal what the owner of the school pay. My aunt who is a teacher told me to apply in a public school. She said it is really hard to be a teacher. Being a teacher in private school and public school is just the same. However, the advantage of being a teacher in public school is that there are lots of benefits and my salary is double on what I used to get on the private school.Yes, I agree that public school teachers get an increase on their salary yearly.Well, for me, my salary is ok. Maybe I say this because I am single and don't have much expenses compare with teachers who already have their own family. I think, for them, their salaries is not yet enough. Maybe, this is case to case basis.

It is good to hear that there are cases where teachers are being paid fairly. I know where I live this really isn't the case. Though I would like to be a teacher someday (if I ever get to go back to school) it isn't because of the money that I want to do it, but rather the love of children and the desire to educate.

I don't think that teachers are paid enough. I volunteer at two of the schools in our area. I see how much time they put into the kids, not only that but they have an after school program for the kids. Most of the teachers that are there do it voluntarily. I have seen all they have to do. I think most of the teachers love what they do because no one would volunteer so much time to be with children without getting paid. Like you said they are helping form our future so why not give them more money?

I think teachers are the backbone of a nation. A person have no future without a teacher. There is saying "Teacher is the candle which burn himself and gives the light to others." I think they should be paid high and more high than the doctors and lawyer, but it is not possible because no Govt. can provide that much fund.
It is not possible practically because there are number of teachers in the world. Each school have at least 10 to 20 teachers and then if you count the number of schools then the number is multiplied to millions. However I am on your side but practically not possible.

I think that there are probably other ways that money can come into education besides from the government alone. However, it would take a lot of work to make that possible. Though my daughter does go to a public school, I honestly wouldn't be opposed to paying something to ensure that the education that she receives is superior.

For me my answer is NO! because as what I see now they are very underpaid and their salary was given so late and there are no enough budget for them. As my experience to my sister, she's a teacher also, she always complain that their salary is so low and the government should have a plan for them to increase their salary because being a teacher is not aN easy task, you make lesson plans and all the things that can help to their students so that they will learn properly, without the teacher there are no doctors, nurses, teachers and lots of profession now if we don't have teachers.
