I recently managed to complete the first e-copy of my book :) I only came in at 32,xxx words however, which is a disappointment when I was aiming for novel. Originally I was very pleased with my work, but after reading and re-reading it so many times, I just don't know :( First copies are in PDF, and will be followed soon in various other formats, and hopefully I'll have it in actual paper print by April. How many "big" projects have you completed? Care to share a bit about them?

congratulations! This is great news. By the way, what is your e-book about? Have you used any websites where you can earn money from downloading the e-books? And another thing, how much do you price your e-book? I would love to write a book myself. I think I will get down to it next year. Maybe participate in nanoWriMo or something to motivate myself. How long did you take to write your book? Please don't tell me it took ages, because I don't think I can take it. I need some inspiration. Haha!

Why wait for the next nanoWriMo? You can do the same thing at any time by keeping track on a calender and using a program that has a word counter, such as Open Office. I got interrupted by illness and having to get a job. From start to finish, it took me just under 4 months, with 100/181 pages being written within the first week. The inspiration came from my friends and listening to lots and lots and lots of Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 songs.

Hi Zoey, Your book sounds great! Tell me more about Smashwords. I'm interested to know what it does. Do you know that you can easily convert your pdf files into word format very easily with an online converter?

The book is about a schizophrenic building a relationship with the new kid on the block and the fact that he might not be as crazy as everyone seems. Honestly not so concerned with making money. I set it up for a minimum $1. I was going to set it up on Smashwords, but i wrote it in .odt and transferred it to .pdf, and Smashwords wants it in word format *sigh*

Congratulations on finishing your book! I have never finished such a big project. I thought about writing a book many times over the years, but just never did it. The closest I have ever come to finishing a big project, was going back to school and becoming a nurse while still working full-time as a preschool teacher and raising my stepson. I would love to find a worthwhile project to do but fear that I lack the energy and willpower to see it through.

I started writing it when I wasn't working.... I had 100 pages in less than a week, and it's about 181 pages long. Once I got sick for two weeks and hard to start working again though... between that and a general lack of motivation, it took me just under 4 months to complete, but I feel it's lacking. Some areas it's very detailed, and others not at all. The chapters are broken down by months, September thru March, and it seems that after the first chapter that the story focuses primarily on just one or two days of the month.

Congratulations on getting your book finished and in ecopy form. Must be very exciting for you. I haven't done much. I have one short story almost done. Trying to figure how I will end it. THen another short in the first stages. I am thinking of writing about five short stories and seeing about publishing them. Different types of romantic stories about dynamic and strong women.

Hi Zoey, Thanks, for talking shop. :O) First of all, I must confess that I'm a sucker for anyone named Zoey (or even just using that an Internet handle)! Hahaha! & your avatar's gonna force me to ask us to be friends. :P (EAT CRAYONS!) Second of all, CONGRATULATIONS, ZOEY!!!! Yay you! :D I don't care what the word count says. When you're through with any draft of any big project, you deserve to pat yourself on the back. So kudos to you! Well, enough about you, let's talk about me! Hahaha! ;O) I've done a bunch of longer projects. NOT the novel. Co-wrote something that size, once. However, what's got me excited is a children's chapter book (grades 1-3) called SLASH! The Great White Shark. :O) It's intense. It's controvertial. And the world of Slash and Lickitty the dolphin is the kind of place in which you can totally lose yourself. It's NOT for everyone, as it's a violent story about an undersea war between two species. But it's got its own spirituality and a lot of science (You learn a lot about the animals in that part of the ocean and ocean life). I loved working with such simplified language. It's all written in a verse-like format. Each chapter is one "verse," rather than paragraphs. And each chapter ends on a serious cliff-hanger. All this encourages a child to read the book in a single sitting. I also enjoyed creating the individual character voices. It's a challenge, because all dolphins look alike, from a human perspective. Hey--even the shark's about the same color, when you stop and think about it. But it was fun letting their personalities and voices identify them in the dialog. It sure was weird being this serious with a talking-animal story. But--for me and the little girl I originally wrote it for--it worked! I sure look forward to sharing it with others in the publishing field or who have kids in the appropriate age group (6-8 years old). And keep visualizing myself hugging the physical book, which will have just a few pictures on the inside, a cover that features the toothy shark (and Lickitty a little less prominent), and a real spine on the book. This will be a book third graders with reading difficulties, for example, will proudly conquer--typically in one sitting (a first, for many). It'll be a badge of initiation into the larger community of readers of REAL books (not baby books like picture books or story books, both of which I love but which they need to distance themselves from). It's a proud feeling to help a child across that threshhold! Hahaha! I'm SO excited, Zoey! :D Thanks, for an opportunity to share. I'd loooooove feedback on this & will be following everybody else's writing adventure in this discussion. Sunshine & Blessings, Giovani

That's wonderful--congratulations! I have started writing on-line articles, and hope to work my way up to a book or two. Don't be disappointed, writing a book and having it published is a major accomplishment! Keep up the good work.

congratulations! It was never easy writing a book. Be it a novel, documentary or even just a short self-help book, it requires extreme determination and most of all...... Talent. I've always wanted to write one however i don't think i have any of the characteristics I've mentioned above. I'm more of a thinking person not doing. Yet again may your book reach greater heights. Just keep it up.
