I don't know what words to use...but my son makes noise with his teeth while sleeping...just similar to the sound that we hear when someone is shivering with cold...first i thought the problem to be small so i contacted the doctor near my house...he told that it may be due to worms...he gave de-worming medications ...a single dose to be given once while going to bed...but that didn't show too much change...so i took him to child specialist...and what he told was that its just because of his naughty nature...he is too active physically and mentally too..and he said its common in growing kids...anyone in your house had this problem....is there anything to worry about this or its just natural?...your views may lessen my worries about him..

Hi Eshaan
Take your Son to the Dentist as it sounds like he is grinding his Teeth in his sleep, I have known People to do this yes
The thing is if you do not take him to the Dentist with this who should give him a Teeth Guard like my Friend had his teeth will turn bad because he is grinding the goodness of the Teeth
I do not know what the Doctors where on about with their Diagnosis but teeth grinding in sleep is a common thing

I don’t know a great deal about this problem. I do hope it’s something that he will outgrow like my daughter’s thumb sucking. She did it often and as she grew only did it when she slept. The habit caused her to have a nasty cross bite the orthodontist now has to fix for a hefty fee! I wonder if another doctor may be able to help you with that.

My seven year old child does this too. It does not happen every time he sleeps but there are instances that I do hear his teeth grinding when he is sleeping. I think that this is normal based on what I have heard from some people. In fact, there are older people who does this likewise. I am not really sure of the rationale as to why this is happening but I do not see any problem when he wakes up.

This is very common, even in adults. My ex used to do it and my sis does it too. And we call it grinding your teeth. My sister went to the dentist for it and she got a teeth guard to protect her teeth, but it comes from stress and tension.

And there is another one - http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/25599
After reading I feel that this is something related with stress and the kids teeth.

Yes it's a temporary condition and he may stop doing it eventually but in the meantime, he is grinding his teeth...he is wearing them down...the problem might go away because he has not enough tooth left to grind against each other.

I'm sorry but the worm part was weird when it comes to grinding his teeth. I wouldn't worry about it to much. There are products out there for this to protect his teeth. A dentist can help you in that matter. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about that until you start to notice differences with his teeth. I sometimes notice at night that my youngest grinds her teeth. So far, her dentist hasn't seen any concern about it. You be amazed how many people, even adults grind their teeth in their sleep and they don't even know that they do it. My oldest talks in her sleep, so when my husband works night, my bed is loud with a talker, grinder and a snorer (my dog snores).

If I am not wrong, this is similar to teeth grinding. It appears to be typical of little kids. When my sis was very young, it happens too. However, she soon outgrows it when she grows up. For your case, since your doctor has rule out medical conditions, I guess it could be stress, or maybe some irregular teeth.

if i'm not wrong, your son has bruxism. i'm not too sure if your son will grow out of it, i didn't. i'm 35 now and i'm still grinding my teeth at night.
i would recommend bringing him to a dentist to see what's the extent of his grinding. i've seen pictures of people whose teeth are ground down to half it's size. it's particularly bad for the jaw too. there are days when i wake up and find that i can open my mouth fully cause my jaw hurts too much.

If he is grinding his teeth he could have a real problem after a while. I would talk to his medical doctor about it. THere could be some medicine that would help him sleep differently so he wouldn't do this. I know men grind their teeth and doctors have remedies for it. I would check with the doctor.

Both my kids do this too! It is also a bit annoying as I could my oldest from across the hall in the middle of the night when he starts grinding his teeth. I saw a link here that said this could be caused by stress. I actually could believe this as I think my son is under a lot of stress for his age. Maybe it just manifests itself as grinding when he goes to sleep.
I sure do hope that they both grow out of it.

ha! ha! ha! It is a very familiar question to me.
It was happened to my children.
I were very curious and searched around for the solution.
Finally, I found an article about this problem in my local newspaper.
The cause of this problem is due to the worm in their stomach.
Those worms are from the foods especially the vegetable which they eat daily.
You must clean the vegetable well before you cook.
I seldom cook at home. We,the whole family eat at the food court most of the time.
I believed those food sellers didn't clean the vegetable well and caused such problem.
Just watch out the vegetables your children eat.

I had this problem while I was kid, which was told by my mom. My mom was told by her friend that it is normal for kids, so she did not do anything about it for me. and it disappeared sometime like when i was 12 or so.And my tooth is good now.it did not harm my teeth. So I think maybe it is natural.Don't worry too much:)

Hello there. Its called Bruxism/"gnashing of teeth". It is typically accompanied by the clenching of the jaw. It is an oral parafunctional activity that occurs in most humans at some time in their lives. In most people, bruxism is mild enough not to be a health problem. During sleep, the subconscious processes become active, while the higher control is inactive, resulting in bruxism. Some bruxism activity is rhythmic (like chewing), and some is sustained (clenching). It may not be a problem for some but my sister suffered some of these symptoms; Earache, Eating disorders, Headache and Sore or painful jaw. We never thought that it may lead to some health problem. During our childhood we ignore it and now she's married she's complaining of these problems. Her physician Diagnosed it as Temporomandibular joint(TMJ)and her dentist advised her to use mouthguard before bedtime. My advise will be don't ignore it.

It sounds as if your son is grinding his teeth. This could be due to a medical condition, one reason kids sometimes grind their teeth is a lack of zinc in their diet.
It could also be that it has become just a habit for him at this point. I would consult your dentist and see what he says. It could be that his jaw is mis-aligned and it feels good for him to grind his teeth. Your dentist can prescribe a mouth guard for him that he can wear at night so that when he grinds his teeth back and forth it won't hurt his teeth.
It's nothing serious as in life-threatening or anything like that, but it could cause permanent damage to his teeth so you should get them looked at.

I was told by my dentist that you grind your teeth because you are under stress. I am not sure how much stress your son could be facing. There is a mouth guard that can be fitted by the dentist to use it when you sleep. I never did as i had no insurance to cover those costs.
