Are There Any Free Knitting Pattern Downloads Online?

Mum used to knit loads when I was younger as she couldn't afford to buy clothes from shops. It was actually cheaper to knit in those days (and you're not talking thousands of years ago, only about 20-25, something like that) and everything fitted properly as well. She is convinced that she has whizzed out her knitting-patterns because she had spells of her eyes hurting. She has had one cataract removed but does have one in her other eye but that is very slow-growing at present. She has often wondered if she could knit again as the light is much better in the back room than it used to be. We looked at knitting patterns in the market in Blackpool a while back and she was dumbfounded at the cost of each pattern. On average about £2.50 a time. "Not paying that!" Mum would say and we walked off empty-handed. So, that is where my friends in the UK come in. And everywhere else if you so wish as I know many ladies in the US and other countries like to knit and sew but I'm unsure of the sizes. Mum used to knit from Sirdar patterns (as she used Sirdar wool quite a lot) but I'm sure she has knitted from Jaeger patterns, allsorts really. She tended to knit jumpers, thicker ones for me and thinner ones for her. She is a diddy person so she has never knitted anything longline but she doesn't like her arms nowadays so three-quarter to long sleeves is a must. She's only about 5ft 1 inches tall and a petite size 12. Anyway, are there any knitters out there that can direct me to free download sites for knitting patterns? I'm usually good at this sort of thing but I've only found patterns where payment is required..and that's a no-no! Modern knitting patterns would be preferred but I guess the best patterns are from the 70s and 80s when more people in the UK knitted. I'm a bit naive about all this so I don't really know.
