Bad Cough

My 5yr old has had this bad cough for about a week or so. Last night it was so bad she couldn't not sleep decently til midnight. I tried honey, warm tea, cough med, her inhailer (only used when she's sick), vicks, & I have a warm mist vaporizor going. I'm at a loss what else I can do for her. She's been ok since midnight but I'm concerned they will send her home. As she's been sent home 2x in the past 6 weeks for coughing alot and most recently last week Friday. If there's anything I'm overlooking please let me know. I think I will be calling the ped office this morning and see what they have to say. And her teacher says she does not seem like herself in recent weeks. Other than having this cold, being tired out (as she's always been a napper), and extra cranky from being tired.

Good morning snuggles, sorry to hear your child is sick. Don't know if any of this will help you but for me, I am ALLERGIC to VICKS!! If I get around anyone with Vicks I will get sick. I personally know a few others that are the same way. It has to be in their inactive ingredients because I can use Menthol Camphor and I do a lot, but NOT VICKS. I never knew, and my Dr assumed I should, I guess, but whenever you have a cough/cold that you should NOT drink MILK!! It makes the symptons worse, causes congestion. One of the best things to drink...COKE COLA! It CUTS the congestion. I learned this when my oldest daughter was in kindergarden and I sent her to school thinking she had a cold and found out she had pneumonia!!! Spent a week in the hospital and that was what they gave her to drink and wanted her to drink as much of it as she could. Hope your daughter is well soon.

I use to drink coke all the time and have broke my habit of it finally, but then I get the cough, allergy sinus drainage, I think, and I have to have the coke! I get that tickle and the cough and I just buy the coke and by the time a 12 pack of cans are gone so's the cough, The second time my daughter was in the hospital, same thing, but different hospital, they gave her Pepsi to drink. My middle daughter had asthma real bad as a child and I kept the coke on hand for her to drink when she got to coughing so hard, always at night, something about the night air. I really don't know if the generic store brands would be the same or not. But as Garden Gerty said, way back when, the dr would would prescribe the coke syrup when you had a cough. Coke was originally developed as a cold medicine! Praying the little one is better!

When I was about five, a million years ago, the doctor would have mom go get coke syrup from the soda fountain for my croup symptoms. The acid cuts the mucus and the caffeine in it is a bronchodilator and opens up the airways, much like an inhaler. There are also some new cough medicines on the market as prescription that work really well. Hope your little one feels better soon.

That's interesting I've never heard of drinking Coke-a-cola for a cold? See to me if I had been coughing and my throat hurts the carbonation would hurt like heck if I recall. Now does it have to be actual Coke-a-cola or could it be a generic store brand cola? My kids usually puke the milk up when they have a bad cough so I know not to give them milk or yogurt. It's quite a mess.

I would certainly bring her to see the doctor.. it could be any number of illnesses that need antibiotics or something, or you may be able to get a prescription grade cough suppressent that may actually work! Is she coughing up phlem, or is it a dry cough? If it's phlem.. avoid dairy products as that creates more mucous. If it's dry.. it may be from the weather.. so put the vaporizer closer or use a humidifier if the vaporizer isn't doing the trick.

She's on ammox for strep! No just dry. I've had a warm mist humidifier running for her. I usually do run one all winter because it is so dry in the house. See that's one thing where I'd love to ask the teacher to put one in her classroom. Because my kids cough alot more if I don't have a humidifier running and I'm sure other kids/people feel the same as well. I know I felt the difference at work vs home.

Yeah, that would probably be what's going on.. the dryness in the air makes a lot of people cough a bit much.

I would take her to the doctor. the sad thing is, a cough takes for ever to go away. and there really isn't much you can do about it. you have to let it run it's course. Of course you can do something to calm it a bit, but not to make it go away. take her to the doctor and allow them to tell you what you can do to help her. what you explained that you have done for her is what any parent will do for their child. I don't think you missed anything. I am sorry she is not feeling well. I hope she gets better fast!

You are right they do take forever. Alot of times that cough lingers even a couple weeks after the cold is gone. My kids always seem to hang onto that cough but only @ night wich is why their Dr prescribed an inhailer. But she was on the fence about doing anything more than what I was doing because usually it takes 7-14 days for a cold to run it's course. However the strep test came back positive so that's where we are at.

Yeah, however... you never know what trick another parent may know that I didn't try so she could sleep. As I've posted to the ped's surprise and mine that she's got strep & is on ammox for the next 10 days.

Smother her feet at night with vick's vapour rub for kids and let her sleep in socks. This works . I do not know why it works but it does work

I've heard of that working. Honestly I don't think I've seen it do much for my kids. Though I did do it for my son as he would break out in a rash when he was very small from it.

Maybe its stupid of me to ask if you have taken her to the doctors. Children being tired is always a warning sign. Or maybe she is just tired from coughing at night so much. Go see the doctor if you havent though. Do not forget to ask the meds for fever eventhough at the time at the doctors, she is not feverish. Do follow the fever instructions. My nurse sister always reminds me that too generous of the fever meds caused by paranoid behaviour (that is my habit) will make the child too cold, thus causing other complications. If she is suffering from flu, try making her soup (or the all time favourite pizza) with garlic in it. For soup 1) Saute a teaspoonful of chopped or grinded garlic with olive oil 2) Pour in ready to serve or not ready to serve chicken or vegetable broth. Garlic has natural anti biotic properties (if i am not mistaken) but dun get too excessive on it too.

Your right garlic does have alot of helpful properties in fighting colds. Nope no fever just a bad cough to the point she could of puked. She could be tired from not getting enough sleep & then add the cold to it. Atleast a time or two a week she's asleep by 5-6pm & sleeps til the next morning.

I think it is time to see the doctor. It could be sinus drainage from an allergy, but it could be something like pneumonia, with unusual symptoms. My daughter had pneumonia in sixth grade, no fever, just seemed like some cold symptoms and fatigue. Whatever it is, you want her to get taken care of and healthy so she can enjoy and participate in the holidays. Good luck.

I have sinus troubles myself. No fatigue, but she normally is tired that's the weird part she's got lots of energy despite the cold and a full day of school. I keep thinking she's outgrowing her naps fully and then boom she's out @ 5-6pm and sleeps thru the morning or unless I should only expect it during growth spurts..... dunno. Again she'll be ok she's got a cold & strep on top of it.

I think she needs to see a doctor. 6 weeks of coughing is too long. I saw on the news recently Whooping cough has made a resurgence and they're seeing cases of it all over the country. I was talking to a friend of mine a couple days ago. Her son had a nasty cough so she took him to the doctor. He has whooping cough. She said he was vaccinated for it as a child.

If it's lasted that long with no relief and she's not felt like herself for more than a month, I think you're right to call the doctor. She might have a bronchial infection that is trying to get established but can't quite get into a full-blown case of bronchitis or pneumonia. I hope she gets better soon!

It has not lasted more than a month she had a similar cold last month. It's not anything you mentioned it's strep throat + a cold. So she's home for 24 hrs til the antibiotic kicks in.

I hope your daughter is doing better now! It sounds like she had a pretty nasty and lingering cough, and that's bound to make anyone feel cranky and down! I know when i was younger it seemed so terrible having a cough, I remember sleeping on the floor in the den with a vaporizer going and vicks vapor rub on my chest and under my nose.

Do you keep the vaporizer going all the time? It may be that the air is harsh and causing her cough. If she is needing an inhaler then she may be sensitive to the air and in the Winter it can be awful. Put alittle eucalyptus oil in the water in the vaporizer and that will help too. And, ofcourse, there is no vaporizer at school so she may cough real bad while there.

My daughter has always gotten a bad cough ever since she was a little baby. She gets really bad sinus drainage but oddly doesn't have any other symptoms of sinus problems. It seems like once every month or two her sinus' drain and she has a bad cough for about 3-5 days. Even the doctors think it is odd. Leave it to me to always have the children with the weirdest things happen to them...lol I have had to get a note from the doctor because every time she starts to cough she sounds terrible!! It is a loud hollow type cough, but she will cough so hard she will sometimes throw up. Someone told us about the coke trick like others here have told you, and for whatever strange reason it works. They say that coke can remove rust from a car...so maybe it thinks mucus..sounds strange, but maybe it is true. All I know is that it works for my daughter. I guess it certainly can't hurt to try it. I hope you daughter feels better soon.

Okay, what I tend to do with my kids when they have a cough with no fever or any other symptoms except for the cough is to let them suck on peppermints. I don't know what it is about the peppermint, but there is something in it that will calm a cough and it is a lot more pleasant for a child than sucking on cough drops (and it seems to last longer as well). I don't know if her school would allow it, but I would probably let her have a couple of peppermints in her pocket that she could put into her mouth after getting a drink of water.

This may sound kind of strange but the other day a friend of mine told me if you rub vicks on the soles of the feet it helps better tahn anything else. It doesnt hurt to try. they explained that after appying vicks to the sole of the foot to put on some socks and go to bed.

If your 5 year old is having trouble with the cough and it has been 6 weeks, I would suggest getting her into the doctor. She could have bronchitis or some other condition. Better safe than sorry. Those uncontrollable coughs can be quite frightening for a little one. If she was coughing so much last night, I would keep her home from school, even though she stopped coughing. Sometimes it helps for them to be away from all of the germs. I definitely would have her checked out by the doctor just to make sure she does not have anything serious. Good Luck

It sounds to me like it's time to get the little one to the doctor. She may have an underlying cause and may need some sort of antibiotic to help her get rid of whatever she may have..
