Why do you leave your computer or laptop ON while you are sleeping?
Why don’t you want to shut down your computer when you are already sleeping?
Have you encountered any disadvantages or effect when you left your computer that is still ON?
Have you ever caught in the act when you did that? Did your parents or other people scold you?
Does it affect much into your electricity bill when you are leaving the computer that is ON?
I have been doing that since I was college especially when I was in sleepless nights and when I am rendering something that you have to wait for a long time before the output will finish. Other than that I didn’t bother to shut it down because I am expecting that I can still wake up every now and then to continue my work. Sometimes it came to the point that my computer works slowly I think that is the effect of over using it and the fact that I often to leave it on.

HOnestly, i leave my computer on when i am asleep or i have an appiontment. but i will turn of the monitor so that if i will arrive or when i wake up, i will just turn on the monitor and start immediately surfing. But i think its better to turn off the whole computer to avoid too much consumption of electricity and of course to avoid paying high electrical bills.

I think turning off the monitor will help to save the electricity. I think it would be nice to switch to standby position of the computer as this will help to save some electricity when not using. Now a days LCD and LED monitors are available that helps to save electricity than the CRT monitors.

No, I always shut my PC and laptop off, I inherited this mentality from my parents, they kept telling me how much money and electricity I'm wasting with not turning off my hardware at night...

I never do that in my life to just leave my computer on and then i am in sleep. It;s just a waste of electricity and maybe could encounter a problem when it's over heating and explode. That's very sensitive case and problem. You should be careful when it comes in that matter. And also, why?can't you just turn it off?when are you feeling sleepy?right?

I shut down the desktop computers when I or my family are not using them. Over the years the power consumption of the boxes have gone up. The CPU now uses about 100 watts when working and graphic cards can now use about the same. OK, the power usage is a lot less when idle but still like having a light bulb on all the time. A power supply unit for a desktop used to be 200W or 300W and now 600W or more is normal.
Luckily, TFT flat screen monitors use much less power than the old CRT monitors and restore quickly.
I ;eave my laptop on all the time as that does not use so much power and I need it to be on 24/7 to do my Forex trades.

I alwasys shut my computer off when I go to bed at night. there is no need to have it on at night and I does save elecrity. if I am not going to be home most of the day, I will also turn off my computer as well.

No, I don't do that. I have never seen a reason to do it, so it has never really been an issue for me.

From time to time I leave it on, but most times I turn it off. When I leave powered on, it's because I leave it doing some work for me while I'm sleeping, such as defragmenting, downloading or seeding a torrent or uploading something to Fileserve. There are some uses that the computer can be instructed to do and leave it on its own, and I reserve those for night usually.
So far I don't see any downside to it, the computer can run unattended for entire days if properly maintained (servers work that way) and the electricity bill cost is very small to be considered.

If you have a PC, I'd recommend shutting it off. I've left my Mac on for days at a time and experienced zero problems with it.

Well... There are many different answers to that question, and it depends on the cost of electricity in your area.
I'll give you an example. I have an Apple Mac Mini. A Mac Mini at idle (computer on, but nothing is running), uses approximately 10 watts. So how much is that in electricity cost?
Well, here in the Ohio in the USA, the cost of power is 9.8¢ per Kilo Watt Hour.
So if the computer was left turned on, and idling all day, that would be (10 watts X 24 hours) 240 Watt Hours. Which is 0.24 Kilo Watt Hours X 9.8¢ = 2.352¢.... or $8.59 if I left my computer running idle for an entire year.
Now Apple Macs happen to be very efficient computers. Some HP, Compaq computers can run upwards of 80 Watts at idle. That would still be only about 20¢ worth of power to sit idle all day.
When a computer is processing something, it uses far more power, than at idle though. From 100 watts, to 140 watts. However, the moment it finishes whatever it is working on, it will go down to idle power levels.
As for you thinking that your computer is slowing down, that is possible. If the computer is lacking in proper ventilation, the computer will detect a high level of heat, and force the processor to slow down. It does this because slowing down the computer will reduce heat. Another possibility is that the operating system can't handle being on this long. If you are using Microsoft Windows, you should likely reboot it at least once a week or more.

Hi Meta,
I always turn off every electrical gadget at home after every use or not using them for at least one hour. It helps me save electricity and cut down on cost. Secondly, I always reduce the risk of overheating from long running appliances, ruining it or worse, starting a fire.
I also do that in the office too. Electricity may not be on my bill but at least I can help the company cut down on electrical costs and the risk of overheating and fire.
Of course that include computers and laptops too.

I think it is just a waste of time and electricity and money, I mean why would you let your laptop/pc on when you are sleeping? Who would use that?
This thing could just warm your laptop and even make its battery run low. My advise to you, save electricity as long as you can. Plus money nowadays are hard to earn.
