Promoting through social sites

According to you whats the best way to promote a company / brand / product over social sites ?
What other ideas would you like to suggest for such promotions ?

Lately social networking has become one of the important promotional tool. This has opened a new way of marketing at least for the amateurs or freelancers who are trying establish their new products. Even well- established brands are taking advantage of this cost-effective and easy way to reach maximum customers. Even major consultancy firms, goverment departments are using media.
Blogging: I think this the most important and easy tool. You can create blogs informing your existing customers.

Thanks Kriskhedhar. It has been of great help to me. I will surely try to get things made ready and available the similar way. As of now its as a page in facebook and as a community in orkut. I am personally trying to promote to my friends too. Still 4 months to go for the comapny to start so hopefully in 4 months a lot of people will hear about us :)

it can also be used to communicate with customers as they can ask questions. thats why you can find almost all giants (particularly IT) having blogs as part of their website.
2. Online communities like facebook, twitter , orkut, myspace can help in posting latest updates about your product. About availability schemes etc to customers.
3. I would say uploading videos of your product and product demos on youtube or similar sites, will help to showcase actual working of the product, and gather feedback from
