Wow, I'ts Postively TROPICAL Here Today!

As you know, us Brits have been a bit miserable lately because, let's face it, we can't cope with the snow and ice and the fact that we've had plummeting temperatures doesn't help our sense of well-being. Even the cat has gone under the duvet. She's not daft is she?
Here in Carlisle, it's been grim. The snow actually helped as it was the "right snow" (whatever that means) so it was relatively easy to walk on, providing you're not old and infirm of course. It was icy in places but nowhere near as bad as Blackpool, where Mum had to dodge the ice (no snow) walking to work instead of riding her bike.
I would say Wednesday was the worsed day here in Carlisle. The temperature never got above freezing and at one point was down to -7 degrees C. I had the heating on but, really, it was a waste of time!
Today, however, despite the wind, the rain and the dullness, the snow has now GONE! It is now a tropical 6 degrees C (that's plus not minus lol) so I'm in a much better mood. No doubt the football match will be on tomorrow as this mild weather is set to continue throughout the weekend.
Hoorah!
Not looking good for next week though, but I try not to think about that!
So, has the thaw began where you are?

It got cold last week; it was in the 30's and 40's (F). But this week, it's been back in the 70's (F). Since moving to New Mexico from South Dakota, I can't handle the cold, snow, ice, etc., and not having to deal with them in southern NM is one of the great things about living here. (Being on the border with Mexico is not one of the great things; it use to be (1980s and before) fun running in to Mexico for the day, but not now.) Last week when it got so cold, I just layed my yardwork tools down on the back patio and came inside and turned on the fireplace. Today, I have to get outside and weed eat the grass in my backyard (it's just a small area of natural grass I have for the dogs) and the grass along my driveway. I charged the battery on the weed eater last night, I have no excuse for not getting outside and "working". Even soccer, I mean football, sounds more fun than weed eating!

"Weed eating" I've never heard of that term before. I think here we just call it "weeding" which doesn't have the same ring to it does it my friend?

Yeh, 6 degrees C which feels really warm compared to -7 or lower the last few nights. It's set to last until about Monday, then it's turning cold again.

We've had nothing more than a few flurries here in Hamilton, but other areas have had more. I don't mind, really... they can have the snow and I'll have my nice clear sidewalks.

BarBaraPrz, what province is Hamilton in? I've been to some parts of Canada, mostly Alberta and BC, but I haven't heard of Hamilton. I'd think you would have had a bunch of snow by now, if you're north of Montana and North Dakota. They were buried in snow in North and South Dakota the last couple of weeks. (My uncle, aunts, cousins, etc. still live in N and S Dakota (and Minnesota). Anyway, good morning!

Hamilton is in southern Ontario, tucked in under the lake, so to speak...

It's not been too bad here in Carlisle for walking because of the snow, funnily enough. That's all gone now and it's currently too warm for ice but that's set to change next week. I'm glad I shall be at Mum's next Saturday for Christmas. She has had bad weather but hardly any snow, so the temperatures have been higher. Mind you, when it's cold it's COLD in Blackpool so I shouldn't count my chickens just yet!
Yes, I did read somewhere that it's colder down south than it usually is. I've been to London in the past when it's been FREEZING! Not nice when I expected it to be mild..I wasn't prepared!

Yesterday was definitely hot enough to 'thaw me out after the coolness of last weekend and all the rain! It was hot and sunny all day and extremely humid! It was 30 degrees by about 8am and only got hotter. Not sure what the temp got to, but it was a bit uncomfortable after the mild start the the summer that we have experienced so far here.

Yeah, it was hard the first year or so that I lived here, but you get used to it and it being covered in sweat becomes normal after a while! You would probably feel extremely uncomfortable if you were dumped into this climate, but I would feel equally uncomfortable in temperatures that got anywhere near zero!

It's funny but when the temperature got above freezing (yesterday) the heating didn't go on until later because I was warm! It's 2 degrees C now but it's not looking good for next week, although it's warmer where Mum is as she is on the coast. I'll be visiting for Christmas a week from now.
I just can't imagine sweating like that. Believe me, it rarely happens here and when it does we all whinge!!

Hi Janey. No the winter weather is setting in it was in the upper 40's last couple of days but today and tomorrow it will be in the teens and snow might happen. Dreading it wish I could hibernate for the winter.....LOL The wind chills will be in the 0's temperatures tomorrow. We have to go out today and get some stuff we need from town dread this we have no spare tire for the truck. I hope and pray that God see's fit to let us make it safely to town and back. Hope you keep getting warmer weather. What season is it where you live? Winter starts on December 21st here!

I think winter starts here on 1st December bit it's started earlier this year as it's been unseasonably cold in November. I think 21st December is the Shortest Day (as in MidWinter) so I'm looking forward to that as the sun comes up a little later each day and goes down a little later..then it will be spring before we know it!
I'm sure you will be fine in your truck. My thoughts will be with you when the colder weather sets in.

If you want tropical jump on a plane and go to the Caribbean Janey. Ha, ha. I live in Somerset in the sunny South West. Today is a better temperature than it has been in the last two weeks. It is about 4 degrees instead of minus 3 degrees which it has been lately. Let us hope the weekend will stay as warm hey.

It's even 6 degrees C now at nearly 11pm. Whoopee! This is the warmest night we've had for about a fortnight and I'm actually quite warm!
Fancy that!
Hope it stays mild for you too, over the weekend. The forecast is looking good.

Hi Janey - yes, it has been great here today with temps up to +7C and not -7C like it was last Friday outside our front door. Fortunately, we have had just the one snowfall but that stayed with us until this morning, and by lunchtime it had all disappeared. I've been to Cardiff City and have actually walked around outside without feeling cold! Amazing the difference in two days. Long-range weather sounds a bit scary saying that we are going to get a repeat of the 1962 winter (yes I remember that!) when we still had snow on the ground at the end of March. But about next week.... There is only here and now.. Next week... Well anything (good) can happen! A bit of optimism there! _Derek

Yes, optimism keeps us going doesn't it Derek? There Here and Now, that's where it's at and I'm planning on enjoying myself tomorrow when the football is on. I am so glad the thaw has happened before Saturday. There is a God lol.

Here in Tennessee where I will be at for another week and a half the weather has been superb. I say this as back home it is with wind chill and snow about 2 below zero.
TN, weather today is 46 degrees and are expecting it to be 58 tomorrow, I feel like it is summer..LOL.. As I am so use to IL 30 below zero degrees F with lot of mushy snow.

Makes me wonder why most people in the tropics would want to go to a cold country to have a "white Christmas" when it's so nice Mylotting here under the Mango tree and sipping iced tea. Most people here want to go there and most people there would want to go here to enjoy the beach and the coconut trees., guess that's what human nature is all about

That's very interesting what you say there my friend. No doubt, if we suddenly got loads of sunshine and it got very hot (yeh, right lol) we'd be moaning about it being too hot. you can always spot the Brits in a hot country..they're in the shade!

Warmed up down here in the midlands today too :) Although this turned all the compacted ice on the car park where I work into a ridiculous hazard - this was the first day the car slipped since all the snow fell. Fortunately I regained control and parked up fast.
Much of it was gone by the time I clocked off at least, but we still had a few accidents of falling over on the way out.

Yes, I believe the transition from snow to thaw can be very dangerous and I'm glad you're ok.
