Taking care of it costs money!

Sherlock - This is my little Sherlock. I took this a couple of days ago. He is sitting right by my mom on my parent's loveseat.

I won 50 dollars yesterday (through a poll website), and I'm really happy about it. I have needed to take Sherlock to the vet for a yearly checkup, and now I can. It will cost a little more than 50 dollars, but I can cover the rest. So I was thinking about how expensive it must be to take care of kids. Then I thought how expensive it must be to buy a new car, and keep it in tip top shape. What do you have that costs you a lot of money to look after?

I don't have any kids but I do have two chihuahuas and they do cost a lot to care for. Just taking them to the vet for their shots and check ups are expensive. And that's not counting when they get sick. I had to take Daisy to the vet two months ago because she did something to her spine. The sad thing was that I didn't have any pet insurance so I ended up paying close to $600 for that trip. Luckily she got better so we didn't need go back to the vet. Another thing would be my car. I'm still paying it off, I have three years left on it. It does cost some money to maintain and care for. I have to change the oil and other parts of the car and take it to the shop every once in a while to get tune ups and things like that which can be expensive.

My Sherlock is 3/4 Chihuahua. I love Chihuahuas. I'm so sorry it cost so much to treat her. Pet insurance is so ezpensive. Not many can afford to get it, but if we don't, we end up paying a lot just the same.

That's especially true if you have an injury prone pet which Daisy is. We've only had her for two years but she's been sick and hurt a few times already. She's just way too hyperactive for her own good.

There are a lot of things that come to mind when taking care of something a animalor a child seems to be 2 of the most important things to me. Of course a car is very important also. I guess it all depends on what someone thinks is the most important. Congradulations on winning the $50.00 that is great.

It's a big relief. I know spending it on something fun would be great. But I care way more a bout my dog than anything I could buy for myself.

I would have picked the same thing if I still had a dog or a cat.

Unfortunately, houses will eat you alive. Ours is suffering because the upkeep has not been done. I need to get someone going on it. Me, partly, hubby, partly, and professionals, mostly.

Yep.. kids and cars are very expensive. Hubby's car needs a whole new exhaust system right now.. and it's dual exhaust. We're looking at at least $1,000. My car cost us about $1,200 last tax season and it's still not 100%.. we're actually going to be buying me a new vehicle this tax season, and I'm not sure what we'll do with my Durango.. maybe sell it or put it up for later use. The home is another major expense. We don't own a house, but we own our trailer and are responsible for everything that goes wrong. I won't even tell you how much has been put off because we just can't afford it!

Tell me about it! When i switched from cloth diapers to disposable diapers (for my daughter) it costs us well over $100 monthly. When she finally got potty trained for day time, we pocketed that extra money and used it for food. As for cars, they can be really expensive to maintain. You have to keep car insurance and tags/ registration on them, even if you don't drive them regularly. This past year, our tire blew out and after replacing it for $40 at a shade tree mechanic, we gave up and let it sit for a whole year. Lucky we work from home and don't really need a car. But, most people would have been in a real pickle. I found it to be an interesting challenge. Just recently, we got the tire fixed and now we are spending money going out almost daily. It's really worrisome for me, cause we don't have that much money to spend. Every day when my spouse goes out, he takes $20 or $30 and doesn't usually buy anything relevant. Just yesterday it was almost $30 for just 2 medium pizzas, milk and donuts. I liked the donuts. But, the rest was misspent. You can really buy so much basic food like chicken, rice, beans, etc. with $20. The good news is that it inspired the money talk and we are back on track. Learning to live with a car was almost as difficult as learning to live without a car. Now are expenses are tripled since we got our car working cause it's just so easy to pop back into the car and drive down to the grocery store or pizza shop. Before, I had to special order food or order take out delivery and a lot of thought went into that process. Now the only thought that goes into it is, "I want that!" and that's enough to get the money spending going.

I have a home and two dogs that take a lot of my money. Some months, they take all of my money. I just don't buy food or my own meds, when that happens. I do get the dog's meds, though. Hopefully, my refinance will go through in the next month or so. That'll be an extra $500 in my pocket each month. I could have used it this month!

I know how you feel about Gissi. I would go without my own meds before depriving Sherlock of medicine he needs. People may not think that would be smart, but when it's our baby, it's worth it.

Pets and children are expensive to have. I hope that Sherlock got on well at the vets. Earlier this month I took my two dogs to the vet. Secret wasn't too keen and Magic really hated going there. They got a check up and an annual vaccination. I have to go back there to pick up a special diet for Magic. It has been so snowy that I haven't been able to get back to the vets to get that. I have a baby daughter aged 18 months, a disabled toddler son aged 3 years and a teenage son aged 15 years old. Having a baby costs lots of money. I had to buy many things when my children were born. A buggy hasn't seemed to last very long like my younger son's first buggy lasted until he was 4 month old. Then my sister gave me a buggy and it broke on our trip to the Baltic countries. So there in Estonia I have to buy another buggy and my son was just 13 months old. That lasted until he was 2 years old. Then we bought a one in the front and one in the back buggy. We have that for him and my baby daughter. My children keep on growing and need bigger clothes. I have ordered some in a half price sale. Later this week my car is due for its MOT and its car insurance will be continued in yearly payment. I will be getting new road tax.

I own an older house....remember that movie the money pit? Well sometimes it is very close to true. This year I had to have new steps put in the front...a new back door....new doors and the garage painted..and a new furnace. Major! But with all the rebates I took advantage and had a very good one put in. Sometimes I think it would be better not to own a home...but in reality I love my little house.

Hi Amber! I think that "everything" costs alot of money! And I don't think that most of us are ever prepared for any of the things that come up that do. My cat Star had blood in his urine and I freaked! I couldn't afford to take him to the Vet, but you can be damn sure I did anyway! And I took Luna too! And then Luna needed to go because he was puking after he ate. It ended up costing me $400 which I am still paying off now! I don't have a car, don't drive, and it's probably for the best because I could never afford a car. The insurance, the gas alone is more than I could even thing about paying. I am on Disability and can't even afford my rent and then they make me pay them back the $447 for the lousy Medicaid that I can't even find doctors who take the damn insurance to begin with! It just seems like I am constantly going around in circles. It's amazing that I haven't totally lost my mind.

Children are definitely expensive that’s for sure! There are the predetermined expenses and the unexpected ones which range from medical costs to birthday gifts for the child and his or her friends! Pets cost a lot too especially when they get sick. Our cat Friday passed away a year ago after we spend hundreds of dollars trying to save his life and that was not budgeted for! I would say my car is not as expensive, that’s for sure!

We knew he was very sick and we thought we were prepared but the day he had to be put down my husband had to take him to the vet because I couldn't do it. I had that cat for 13 years and my daughter and I were devastated so when my husband returned from the vet's he took us to the RSPCA shelter and got us a new kitten. It was for our daughter more than for me. The new cat is lovely but I still miss my boy after all this time, you can get a new pet to focus on but you can't replace them!

I don't have any kids, but I do have several pets that require lots of money to look after. I am also in college, and tuition is really expensive! On top of that, I have to buy books, groceries, etc.

Yes pretty much everything these days is so hard to maintain. I have had my share this year of car trouble expenses and have put off the dentist and doctor visits as the funds are so low.

Congratulations! Winning money is fun. Right now we have no pets and our kids are grown. I would have to say our biggest expense is our monthly cable bill. My car is not expensive to keep in tip top condition. However, I did have one eye repaired and will have the other one repaired in about a week and that was terribly costly. It's going to be well worth it when I am all finished.

I think the general cost of living is surprisingly expensive. That's where most of our money seems to go. Keeping stocked on essentials like toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, etc. costs so much anymore. I have to say that I'm surprised that having a baby now isn't the main expense we have. I work from home so we're able to avoid a daycare cost, which is huge. I worked in daycares and I know how expensive that can get. Diapers can get expensive, but we buy a large box and it lasts for awhile.

Well, we have good insurance, yet it costs for doctor visits and meds, and now with 2 puppies, that is double the cost of one dog. This reminds me, I need to get the dogs their license now, it is half price, I'll be paying the normal price for a single dog, but that is the cost of having two..

Depending on what kind of warranty one has on their new car is how much it would cost to keep it in good shape. All one would have to pay for is the regular scheduled service other than that its gas, oil and whatever else the car calls for. Now what do we ha e that costs us to keep with their upkeep is our 17 furry friends. 12 cats and 5 dogs. Some of our cats were strays that have adopted us and we them. They all need their yearly shots and sick/injury vet visits as well but we've found a wonderful caring and inexpensive vet for us to go to which helps keep the cost down.

right now, my car is costing me money apart from car payments. I need a service and have 2 slow leaks and two windows, if opened, do not go up again easily. It is just little things like a light socket for the right head lamp. Things like that. Then by the time I turn around and get this done then it will be tyres that are needed. But I could not have a job without a car so it is a necessity. I just have to count my blessings and hug it up

My car is the one thing that takes my money from me! It has taken alot over the two years I have had it and there is more that needs to be looked at! Like the defroster which is not working on the drivers side to well! If it is one thing it is another! Then after that I am still paying off a dcotor's bill and my late horse's vet bill! It never ends!
