In today's world, work often consumes the minds of the workers so much that sometimes they are willing to work even though there are observed holidays like Christmas and the New Year (along with other declared holidays). Of course, there is a bonus waiting for those people (usually in cash)who do come for work.
Though their reasons are very understandable, do you think that workers cannot appreciate the holiday when they are actually working on that special day? Or people are more concerned about making money that they don't care for holidays or celebrating them at all?

My friend has to work on Christmas...she works for a foreign company, a Korean company, since she is an online teacher and on Christmas the children don't have any classes she has to tutor them in speaking English...
I think most workers are not happy to be working on a holiday but sometimes it's not their choice and for those who sis the choosing maybe they're too workaholic...

I used to work as a medical technologist and i was scheduled to work on Christmas eve. hayyyyss! i didnt have a choice. Just imagine, while everyone else is with their families having a good time, there i was sitting in front of a microscope counting white blood cells on pathologic urine, and when im done with routine work i get to chat with my "plastic" coworkers in the hospital! What a cheerful time of the year!
Actually, i wouldnt mind couting white blood cells in pathologic urine, i just dont like to pretend that i liked the people im working with. Heheheh!

Hi Jeanneyvonne,
I'm sure that all those that work on Christmas have different stories. I work on Christmas. Why? Because I am a single mom and my family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. I go into work at 2pm and work until 11pm. Yes, I get paid double for being there on Christmas but there is no gain because I took Christmas Eve off to be with family. I work Thanksgiving 2nd shift and I do get extra money which really helps this time of year. I do have dinner with the family before going in to work. I get comments all the time from customers who feel bad that I'm working. Well, if some of us did not work then you all who don't would not be able to run to the store and get your gas or other items that you need last minute. Health care workers, police, fire dept....all have to work regardless of holidays. Road crews as well. It's not that we would not love more time off or that we don't care for the holidays....someone has to do it. Most of us if we have to work will celebrate on a different day or at a different time of day.

I think that workers everywhere should have off from work on the holidays. Everyone deserves a chance to be with their families. if your job is necessary to work on holidays, then everyone should share in that and not put the burden on one person.

Money come first, I remember when I was joking with one of my co - workers. Actually, to make a living is actually hard, especially with today's economy all around the world. We are lucky enough to have this opportunity regardless whether it is holiday or not. We still have to make a living, and keep up with all the bills. We can't depend on charity to help us, we still have to put the bread on the table, don't we? We love to celebrate the holiday with our family, but we need to make money.

My daughter is going to be working on Christmas Eve. If not, it would have been an unpaid day off. Due to unforseen circumstances she has missed some work days the past couple of weeks so her pay has been short. Times are rough everywhere right now. Short pay checks make a big difference in peoples lives. If she gets offered the choice she will also work half a day on Christmas day. We will just work our Christmas dinner around her schedule. No big deal. No little children at home. People do what hey have to do to make ends meet.

A lot of the time people just don't have a choice. You need money to buy food, pay rent/mortgage, buy clothes and toiletries, etc, etc. In some jobs, employees have no choice but to work on holidays. If you're scheduled, you work or you could lose your job. For others, they have nothing else to do. People who live away from their families and have no one to spend the holidays with, making overtime or holiday bay is well worth it if you would otherwise just be sitting at home being alone.

I wouldn't mind working on Christmas - I think I would get Double Pay which would be like $24 an hour for me! And that's awesome. It doesn't mean that these people who work are bad family members or don't have holiday spirit..It maybe just means that they were stuck working beyond their control, they need money, or they can spend time/a holiday celebration another time with their family. If the opportunity ever came up..I would totally take it!

In the economy that we are in currently I would say that a lot more people have no really choice but to work everyday they can in order to pay their bills and feed themselves. I would work Christmas but my place of employment is closed Christmas and does not open until 11am the following morning on boxing day.I think almost all business are closed on Christmas so their are very few people that have to work on Christmas except essential services like fire , police and ambulance services.I cannot even think of a place open on Christmas other than the movie theater and like one Irving in my town.Hopefully things get better next year and inflation and the recession does not get worse and starts to recover.

they care so much for holidays season but it's just that they have to work for a reason. it is compulsory for them to work, they a money for some reason, they don't want to lose their work.
