Anti Islamic rhetoric ... a lot of fiction mixed in with a small bit of fact?

Hi folks. Over the past few years, I have seen a huge tide of change in relation to how muslims and Islam is perceived. I have witnessed people, who although are generally good people at heart, turn into monsters with their ire and anger aimed at muslims. They have many arguments and reasons for their behaviour and their anger - but I'm afraid quite a lot of the reasons they put forward are based on tiny bits of fact - very often taken out of context - and a huge amount of fiction thrown in to make it all sound so reasonable. One example was where a guy suggested that getting car insurance was against Islamic law, and therefore all muslims just had to be driving their cars without insurance. He roused up locals within his community to demand the sheriff target known muslims to inspect their drivers details. Thankfully, the sheriff was not as blinded by hatred, and had no justifiable reason to target muslims within the community he oversaw. Do you have any experiences or tales to relate?
