Do you clear your credit card debt each month or only pay the minimum payment?

Most of us do have credit cards nowadays and i feel like credit card actually brings more benefit to us as we don't have to bring so much cash and the tendency of being robbed is minimized for that. However, recently i heard that this year alone, 4000++ credit card users in my Country filled for bankruptcy due to huge debt in their credit cards.... Just wondering whether this is a world wide phenomena or only happening in certain countries...
I will usually pay off all my credit card debts for the month... unless i forget :p
Paying minimum payment is like having a high interest debt with the bank and hopefully not many of us are doing that.... unless you do know how to utilize the money you used from the credit card to earn more money.... :D

Good day to you Asxenon,
With reference to your main query, I do always see to it that I cleared the total outstanding due to my credit card every month. For the reason, I dont want to pay any extra charges since this will be an added expense on my part. Hence, I am trying to control myself in spending since it is indeed difficult to spend and live beyond your means. So, whenever I am using my card, I try to budget every single cent that I spent.

That's great. Budgeting is surely the most important part in financial security. Sometimes, people tend to overspend with the invention of Credit Card. We can spend our future money with it.... dangerous in a way :p
Do keep track on our expense and never over spend. Bank and credit card companies are charging high interest rates on delayed payment :D
Good luck!

At the present time i don't have any credit cards. When i did, i always just paid the minimum. I know that makes it longer to pay off, but finances did not always allow it. I think i am better off without the credit card hassle.

I don't use my credit card actually. But, both my parents have several. From what I have known, they do pay their credit card bill full.

I used to clear it every month. But in recent time, my spending balloons and I could only pay the minimum amount. The interest itself is so high that in a couple of months, it is almost the same as my spending. So now, I am working hard to reduce it.

I would advise you to stop using your credit card for the moment and try to payoff the debt before reusing it. If you keep on using it and only pay the minimum, you'll end up with huge debt. Better be careful on your credit card spendings before it is too late.
All the best to you!

Only the last two months have i not paid off my credit card. It will be fully paid off this month, but I had some other bills that needed to get taken care of. I make good use of my credit card points. It was a small balance that got carried over, less than 200.00. i still hated to do it, knowing what the interest rate was going to be.

We're switching to paying them off every month. For the last few years, we've struggled with credit card debt because we didn't make enough to make ends meet, but we've slowly paid them off. This month will be the final payment and going forward we'll be able to pay the balance every month. We'll probably just avoid putting stuff on them, though.

My husband and I always pay off the entire balance on our credit cards. We play it as soon as we receive the monthly statement. That way, we don't forget. We put everything on the credit, gas, groceries, utilities, etc. Swiping the plastic is easier than writing a check, especially for one who has trouble writing.

I think that credit cards are very dangerous and I used to have two of my own! As a result of using them I got myself into serious debt and I'm still in the process of paying that debt off. I used to only pay the minimum payment and this obviously wasn't getting me anywhere. I have major regrets about applying for credit cards in the first place and I wouldn't advise their use, I would forget about them altogether.
I can only think of one option whereby the credit card would be invaluable and that is if you were stuck abroad for example! The credit card would then have a good use of getting you out of a sticky mess in an emergency. If I even considered getting a credit card again this is what I would use it for and nothing else. In anycase it sounds like you are quite responsible when it comes to using credit cards but you must make sure that you never fall into that trap of becoming a prisoner to your credit card.
I think that it's quite common now for a lot of people to have credit card debt all over the world. It's really sad that this has become a part of daily life. I just want to get rid of my debt altogether and I anxiously await that momentous day! Andrew

Thanks Andrew for your warning on the danger of credit cards. You are correct that we shouldn't fall into the trap especially paying the minimum payment. If any person continues to pay only the minimum amount, then he/she will end up with huge debt that seems to take forever to clear.... Luckily you found out that you have fallen into the trap and is starting to clear your debt.
Hopefully you'll manage to clear your debt soon. All the best to you!

Based on the fact that earlier in my husband and my relationship we would use the credit cards and then only make the minimum payment on them each month, we decided a year ago that we were no longer going to use credit cards at all and we are now working on paying off all of our debt. Last month I paid off my first credit card that was in my name and I intend to pay off the rest of them in February or March of next year. We are also attacking my husband's as well and when that is done we will only have debt on our house and we will know how to live without credit cards.

It is great to hear that you are starting to payoff your credit card debts. Sometimes mistakes are what it takes to learn a valuable lesson in life.
All the best to you and hopefully you and you husband will have a debt-free live after this.
Good luck and all the best!

Yes, I pay off any debt I have in full every month. I just think it is the easiest thing to do, and it also makes sure you do not get too deep into debt, which is something I really want to avoid!

having a card does minimise the robbery, but if you do have one, you don't really have the 'sense' of money.. you see something you really like, you buy, and then you realise it might have been more expensive than you first thought.. whereas if you have cash, you know exactly how much to spend..

I really think it depends on how the person controls their spendings...
You are right that having credit card has no 'sense' of money. However, if you think deeper, it is actually using your future money. If you can treat buying things with credit card is actually lending some money from others to buy the things you wanted, then you can actually control yourself not to 'lend' more than what you can pay back.... If someone really can't do that, i think he/she might as well don't use a credit card and rely on physical currency for any trading.

If you want to utilize it properly, then pay off the full amount you use for each statement. Don't ever pay only the minimum. If you pay the whole amount you spend each month, then there will be a 20 day, interest free period. If you pay only the minimum, then you will end up pilling your debts and be a slave to your credit card.

I am very careful that I do not owe anything on my credit card at the end of each month. I keep a careful record of what I am spending and I know my limit. I can then clear it. This means that it is good in two ways. I have had 1 month of interest-free credit, and I am not running up my bills.
I was once owing money in this way. It wasn't a huge amount, but interest kept going on and it took me around 5 years to clear it. Far more than what I spent. I was lucky that I could clear it, and vowed never again to let that happen, because credit on those cards cost far more than arranging a loan. _Derek

Ah... I don't share your beliefs at all. Having credit cards hasn't reduced robbery at all. In fact, robbery nationwide is near an all time high, in our country at least.
Besides, it's not like a robber is going to know which person is carrying cash, and which has cards. Nor would he care. He can charge up a credit card until you call the company and cancel it, or until it maxes out, just as much as he could spend cash until it runs out. Either one will work for him.
No, instead credit cards have merely added more way to mess up the public. Now you have credit card fraud, and identity theft. I know people who have spent 5 years trying to clean up stolen identity, and fraudulent accounts.
So here's my answer. I don't have any credit cards anywhere. None. I don't play with those snakes. I don't pay any interest. No one steals my accounts because I don't have any. I have no debt at all. It's the best way to live.

I try to pay them off each month. Sometimes I can't and try to pay over the minimum a little bit. I am hoping that doing that will pay them off a little bit faster. I try not to use them at all. I have a debit card that I use because the balance comes right out of my checking. Sometimes I can't use it and use a regular charge. I don't like to use the debit card if I order on-line, and sometimes the purchase is for more than is in my account. I don't feel comfortable with any of my account details being on-line. I use a credit card that you are not responsible if someone makes an unauthorized purchase.

I wish.
I'm on disability pension (in Australia), and I can barely afford minimum payment which just covers the interest.

I will not have a credit card anymore, years ago when i was married and earning quite a lot of money, my ex wife would get things on both the credit card and the mastercard, aswel as paying for things with cash. It was killing me as i was working 6 or 7 days a week, she would not work and yet she psent all the money, in the end i could only afford to pay off the minimum needed per month, this really did end up costing me as me and my wife split, the bank was empted by her, the cards were both in my name and so i ended up with a load of debt for quite a few years, now i will not get credit cards again, after such a bad experience.

I have it set up so that my credit union pays my credit card every month in full. One month they didn't and I got a 4 dollar charge. I never brought it up, but I should have because it was their fault. Other than that I have no complaints. I live below my means.
