Help! Xmas gift for my BF!

I need to buy a gift for my boyfriend, but I don't know what to give him. He likes to read, but he forbid me to buy books.
I really hate little cute and lovely gifts. That's why I have hard time to decide what to give him.
If that's going to help, he's really practical guy.

Take him to the mall. You can ask him what he likes or do not ask him and just observe him. You may know his other interests since you are his girl. Give him that instead of the book.

Well, I'm not really so good at this since I never had a boyfriend. XD. Maybe a simple gadget will do. I don't know what specific gadget it would be but you can try looking for one. Something that he can use and not just for display since he is a practical man.
