Till now bikes were allowed in my university but there has been on going debate between administrative body and the student council members whether they should ban bike in the campus or not. They are still weighing pros and cons of it and not yet decided. Administration wants to ban it where as student council is fighting for students who don't want it to be banned. I really don't know the reason but i think it may be because bike gives easy accessibility to violence. I think as long as students can afford and their parents wants them student can own a bike and use it in the college. What do you say? Can you say what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Well i have retired after teaching in colleges for 45 years, as Principal i called meetings of parents, students representatives, police and administration to discuss, but it could not be finalised.. Well it should not be banned, if the student has a valid license, they should park the vehicle in a shade away from class rooms, and need not disturb , by running vehicle near class rooms.. Thank you so much for timely discussion. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Merry Christmas HAPPY NEW YEAR

That is really a great job. I always appreciate Teachers and I am a student studying Engineering in one of NIT in India. So I thought I would love to hear from peoples of different walks of life around the globe about the decision of ban on bike in university. So I started the discussion here. As sir said, the decision did not succeed. It was opposed by students and student council. Then need of bikes or vehicles in my university as felt by students is that during summer, it is unbearably hot to walk to the class room and back to hostel. Temperature rises to more than 45 degree though we have three months summer break. Thanks for your response. Merry Christmas! Happy New Year to you too. With Respect.

I do not see why your school would like to ban bikes, so much has already been said by the other posters regarding health and the good it can do to the environment, what I do not understand is "bike gives easy accessibility to violence." what does that mean? or what does the school mean by that? Does it mean it is not safe?, I think safety depends on the driver rather than the vehicle considering they are in good condition.

Well if the University have a valid and strong reason to ban those bikes then of course they can. But how about those students who are honestly depending on their bike as their transportation and don't want to pay for bus fee? I think this problem is going to be quite tough to the University and also their students. Maybe they can just simply make a new list of rules for bikes users instead of banning it like that. Have a nice day

Banning bikes would not help solve any problems. The university can regulate how and where to use bikes on their campus. It can even allocate particular spot for parking bikes. Bikes are extremely convenient and time saving for everyone.

I feel till certain age, students can avoid taking bikes because it may be risky to their life. I come across so many incidences every day that due to some or the other accident students die in driving. Teenage is the age where kids are completely charged and they would like to charge. So till you are matured enough, please avoid using bikes.

When my son went away to college we had a deal either I buy him a bike as he could not take his car with him or he did not go away to college. New college students leaving home for the first time tend to be a bit freely so I was afraid that perhaps he would be enticed to drink and then a car accident or injuring someone. Although he did not drink I did not want to take the chance. Also registration, insurance and plates for the new state was something I was not going to do. So I bought him a bike as that is what so many did, I find no reason why they should ban them as they should provide bike rails to parked them at.

I think they should be allowed on campus. We allow bikes on our campus and one time my friend had an accident with a person in an electric cart so they have only certain places electric carts can go now. Also, bikes get stolen from campus quite frequently. People just break the locks and make of with dozens of bikes. I don't ride my bike that often. I almost got run over by a car so I only like to ride on the campus itself. I'm so short I have a girl's bike because woman's bikes are too big for me.

It is a stupid thing to do. One cannot stop violence if they ban just bikes. They have to look for the root causes of such things. I have heard of a university which banned multimedia mobiles in even hostels. It appears very weird when 99.99 percent of the universities are teaching materialism in the classes as the end goal of any student is to become successful and having good facilities in life and they are banning such things in the university. It is like having double standards.

I feel use of bike in universities need restricted the fact is that where i live universties are located outside the city so its not advisible to travel 64kms a day in bike it will spoil your health so i woudl not allow that. But you can provide the best buses around and can permit four wheelers.

bikes are the ultimate weapon for saving human kind. almost thousands of cars are sold everyday.. making our world more polluted.. for me.. its a better idea to own a bike.. go to school .. it should never be banned.. for God sake.. advantages of bikes are.. you can have more exercise, it can burn calories, can go to school early without having problems with traffic.. only its disadvantages could be.. it can be stolen.. the heat in the Philippines is intense, and you can be sweaty when you are hurrying going to school. but its more economical than riding a car or a jeepney. people who likes banning it, are people who doesn't know to ride it.. that's for sure.. ^^

I don't see any reason why bicycles have to be banned in campuses? It is beneficial to everybody. It will help save the environment. It will help keep the students fit. It will give everybody in the campus a much needed rest from air pollution. It saves the students money from commuting to and from the school or from the gasoline they use for their car. It saves the campus from space being used as car parks. Instead of converting a lot to a car park, convert it to a building (library, lab or whatever educational purpose they can think of) where everyone can use. What else is there? I think what the administration must do is to enhance safety rules to encourage all not only the students but the staff as well to use bicycles. It is a waste of time if you exert effort in implementation of banning of bicycles in campuses...

greetings First of all, I don't think bikes should be banned. In fact, bikes are a lot better than cars because it is environment friendly. These bike do have advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of allowing bikes is the environment, faster way to get to school, exercise. The disadvantages of bikes are that it takes space, it is not really noticed at night, it is a road hazard in main roads. Try to keep the bikes in school :) In fact, everybody should use a bike :) Save the Earth :)

I think the university would like to ban bikes within the campus because they think it is dangerous. I agree it is confinient to have bikes around the campus but traffic accidents can happen more easily with the bikes and as what you have said, more violence might happen. Therefore, I think bikes should be banned.

They attempted a similar move here a few years back. In protest, the students brought all their bikes to the university and piled them up on the stairs, saying they had no use for them anyway now. The council had to withdraw their decision in a week, and allow the bikes back. I think the bikes have way more advantages than disadvantages for everybody, and the administration is just being narrow-minded when making these decisions. It's like saying that we should cut down all the trees because their leaves fall off in autumn and they make a mess.

. . .i guess your query with regards to bike was just simple but it make too many discussion to take into consideration. . . . . .all you have to know is what are the capacity of the student to provide a one bicycle, that they can have even one? what are the criteria that they will follow if that proposal takes into action? what are the precautionary measure that they can provide to the parents if that proposal are approved? does bike is necessary to have and make it as a primary transportation medium? . . .you know these are some of the example question you have to take into consideration on that matter.just look at this way are these will be beneficial?? to whom? and up to what extent?or it is better to walk that to ride on a bike??
