It is really sad that this things are happening to our nurses. I know there are a lot of nurses out there who are in the same position as yours. In fact, I even find your position better considering that there are others who are still on the waiting list just to volunteer to have an experience. Anyway, do not lose hope. I am sure that you will have your chance one day.

There is always a time for everything. In my opinion, your on your right tract. However, you need to decipher yourself first what direction you really want - to be a hospital nurse or an emergency nurse. Either way you need to equipped yourself first things first. If you want to become a nurse in the outfield, you better equipped yourself first. I say you are on the right track, being a ward nurse, its the first thing to do. Don't count on the "how much" you can get...look deeper and appreciate the "what you can get" - the learning and skills aspect. I am a nurse too and been with a local rescue group too for a quite time and it was a great experienced - all the adrenalin rush. So my guidance to you, take all the necessary skills you can get while working in the hospital and once you have all what it takes to become an ambulance nurse in a rescue group - go for it and prepare yourself holistically for the training. Good luck.
