Why lie to kids?

I was just thinking how Santa Claus is an imaginary character and yet kids are told that he's real. Sure it's all fun and a tradition to most, but is it really necessary? I mean in the end, when a kid finds out they'll get upset and whatnot. Also, I started thinking about other lies that we're told as kids. I think it would just be better off if they aren't told lies. What do you guys think?

I don't really consider it lying straight to their faces. I believe it is just a mechanism on part of adults to keep children satisfied with an answer that the children can understand. Of course, there are children who will recognize the lie right away but there are still adults who believe that children should not overloaded with information or they (the children) will be confused. I guess how you answer the question is depending on the child and the parent's gauge of the child's maturity.

I agree with you. I don't the kids should be told any lies otherwise they can end up making bad decisions or end up being teased for believing in something that is not true.

I don't know - I never really got upset when I found out. :) hahah, and I think kids know that Santa is not real far earlier than we think they know. :) another thought that I had was - kids lie to themselves and each other and they have a blast doing it! As my son says it 'We're just uhttending' (pretending). I'm really not sure, but I would imagine you would avoid the hurt and trust issues as long as you are completely honest when the child is really seeking the truth - you know - when the child is sincerely looking to his or her parents for reliable information and guidance. So... I don't know... maybe I'd just call it pretending...

i think it's nice to have a regular amount of fairy tale but only until 5 years old and slowly start with the truths cause kids could be really disappointed if they find too late

When I was little I also believe in Santa Claus ,but now, slowly grew up ,also begin to understand what it is , I think ,sometimes needn't think so many ,isn't it ? Maybe when the children grow up ,they will understand many things .
