Have you ever dyed your hair?

I'm thinking of coloring my hair. I have dark brown hair and I'd love burgundy highlights. Except, from what I've heard they don't last too long. And I would do it at home, but they don't have the color I would like. Have you ever dyed your hair before? Did you go to a salon or do it yourself? What color did you dye it? Did you like it? How much did you pay for it? How long did it last?

First be cautious... since you are going to colour your hair for the first time first take a prelim test by colouring a sample portion of hair. it the dye suits your skin and hair then go ahead or else change the brand. its very important to take a test orelse the consequences will be severe...

Thank you for the warning. I appreciate it. I have dyed my hair a few times before with at home highlights and it worked fine. This time it'll be a different color.

Ironically I just now dyed my hair. I would rather use a more natural form of dying, but that would include gathering a bunch of sage leaves every month..:( I also waited until I got way too much gray. (Because a kid at my daughters soccer practice asked what that was in my hair. I freaked thinking it was an insect, her mom said it was gray hair.) Plus when I started out, I used the kind that washes out, not the permanent, it is safer to use. Of course by now, I am stuck dying it using a permanent kit. My color is anywhere from light to medium golden brown, because I want to keep my natural color, because I really like it. I pay about 3-4 dollars for Revlon at walmart and I dye it every 3-4 months.

That was my biggest problem too, the fear of it looking weird as it fades. But since I did get a color close to my natural color, it was not noticeable. Yet even if I did color it a complete different color, the color does fade gradually; I don't think it would look bad. As for how long it lasts, I think on the ones that wash out, it depends on how much you wash your hair. It will say on the box that it will last through so many washings.

I must agree. Maybe it won't look that bad. I'm going ot go for it and give myself burgundy highlights at home. I am so excited.

Your story made me smile. Little kids are just too funny. I don't think I'll use permanent hair dye. I mean, I just would like it to last a few months at the most. I just hope it doesn't look too weird once it's fading out of my hair.

I regularly dye my hair. Before i was using ordinary hair dye which never last for long time and my hair damaged due to Ammonia. But now i am using L'Oreal's INOA Hair Color which lasts for long time and is totally Ammonia free , secondly smell is good and uses Oil delivery system which is very healthier for my hair. Try it once.

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the suggestion! That stinks that you used a dye with ammonia and it ruined your hair. I'm sorry to hear that.

Lets see... Yes I have I did it myself I started with a sort of burgundy shade which I paid £3.99 for and it lasted months & I loved it. Now I just put random colours in... cerise, violet, turquoise... whatever.

Go to a beauty supply store, and tell them what you want. The way I understand it, you can get the color, activator and conditioner all separate, and it is a type that lasts longer, it is professional.

Wow! I'd go crazy colors too, but I've always loved dark red. It seems that burgundy would be the best color. Apparently highlights in a salon are expensive and don't last long though and I don't want them permanent unless I know I like them. And I'd do it myself, but they don't offer that color. What do you suggest I do?

I would never dy my hair myself! The reason is I remember my mom used to do it. Most of the time it was her natural color and it covered the grey. I have this memory of my mom dying her hair and she dyed it a much darker color then normal! I also remmember we went then to a birthday party for,I think for one of my nephhews. Thanks to my mom's hair being to dark that was the subject we all ended up talking about when she was gone! We could not believe she did that! I have no idea why she dyed hair so dark! Thanks to that memory I will not attempt and dye my hair myself! If I ever do it I will go to a salon and have it done!

I have been dying my hair for over 10 years, I used to color it at home but every time I did it came out weird looking colors, so now I go to the salon and get them to do it, with cut wash, and color it runs anywhere from $60- $80 and I don't mind paying because those boxes of hair colors I just can not trust anymore I need my hair done so bad but haven't had the money lately to do it but I will go some time soon.

Yea it is cheaper but it for me it always comes out the wrong color, and I am too embarest to go out side when that happens so with my hair I have to leave it to the professionals because my hair is weird that way. Well have a nice day and hope you had a Merry Christmas!

I never had problems with using box color at home. I used to color my hair, well, highlighted it. Although, I remember my hair turned almost an orange color when my mom left the hair dye on too long. But then again, for less than five bucks a box, how can you complain?

I have done both, and I have done the burgundy. You have to get a level 3 for hair color to be permanent, and it still wears off in 4-6 weeks generally. Reds, and burgundy is a red, are the hardest colors to keep. You have to use the right shampoo and conditioning products. Funny to tell on myself. I have dark hair, but lots of gray, some streaks of gray. The first time I dyed my hair I was using a kind of auburn, but the biggest gray streaks turned fuschia, I am too old to have that kind of a color, so I washed it with dish detergent to calm it down. After I started using the color regularly, it looked the way it was supposed to, but initially that streak was so untreated it just blazed. I had my hair permed and colored in a salon, once. I got a discount but still paid seventy dollars. My hair was long and thick at that time. In order to get the dye all out of my hair and go back natural, about two years ago I had my hair cut really short, twice. Then I did it again, to cut the rest off after it grew.

Thanks for the information about the dyes. I actually picked up a level III burgundy color about a week ago from CVS. I can't wait to give myself highlights at home. I'm so excited! I bet you look good with fuchsia highlights.

I have dyed my hair many times!! Mostly at home, you can get a good box of dye for $10-12. I have naturally dark gair and I mostly color it blonde, but I have done red as well....didn't like that at all but it was a fun change! I have also gone to a salon several times but they never seem to get the color right for me, weird because you would think they would do a great job but the places I have gone to professionally weren't that great.

I could never dye my hair blond. It would look funny since I have dark brown eyes. I do have fair skin though. Hmm. Maybe instead of getting highlights done at the salon and spending a boat load of cash that will only last a few weeks, that I'll buy a whole box of hair color and dye my whole head that color. And some even have built in highlights too. So I can match the dark brown natural hair color I have that way. What do you think?

No, I haven't dyed my hair...at least not yet. But when I do (chances are I'll do it eventually), I'll probably just do it myself. I'm just not sure what color I'll choose. Happy holidays!

I have got dark brown hair. When I was a teenager I got ginger low lights and a perm at a hair salon. Then I gave my hair a deep red henna treatment lots of times in my twenties. That conditioned my hair and gave me a subtle color. When I was 31 years old my ex-boyfriend treated me to a hair cut and color in a hair salon. I have my hair trimmed and dyed ginger. They did my hair in a natural sort of color that was just what I wanted. I paid £60 for it. It looked great for only one year. I didn't bother having a hair cut or dye since then. I went on a trip to Turkey with that dyed hair and my hair looked fantastic. I thought about getting hair extensions but I decided against it.

Ah. You're a big fan of red hair color too! I would dye my hair totally dark red if I knew it would look good on me. The problem is I have dark brown eyes, so I can't go too red or it would look funny.

I used to do that many years ago. But since iam happy with what Jahovah gave me i dont di this anymore. I think people that dye their hair and wear lots of make up are not happy with theirself.

Im a very broad minded person. There nothing wrong with being happy with what God gave you. But it is commonly known the the more make up a person wears the more they are uncomfortable with themselves. Dying does alot of damage to the hair too. Thats why they recommend periods after the first dying. Also dont be surprized if you start loosing hair because of the damage. Many of very attractive females destroys what came to them naturally but wearing a bunch of make up looking like they are ready for holloween.

For the past couple of years, I've been noticing a lot more gray hairs on my head. And I have been thinking of dying them, but I couldn't find the time or wouldn't know how to anyway. But once, when I was visiting some friends and found one of the host having her hair color done, I was asked if I wanted mine colored too. They had some extra dye so I had them randomly blond some of my hair. But after showering I didn't find anything come of it.

I've thought of dying my goatee. I don't like the flecks of grey in it and would rather it be all grey or all black.

You should go for it! What is there to lose? If it looks bad, you can always dye it a different color. As long as you don't dye your hair very often. Good luck!

Ah. I think it's nice to experiment with our hair. I mean, a couple times of dying your hair won't kill it.

I've never coloured my hair. Not once. I've got very sensitive skin and I'm worried about how a dye might affect my scalp/skin. My husband colours his hair and he does it at home. My friends go to the salon.

I've colored my hair since I was 25. Usually it's anything from medium brown to dark brown, sometimes reddish brown. Right now it's deep burgundy brown. I have never done highlights and I've never had it colored at a salon. It lasts about a month (gray roots)...

I've not dyed my hair although it has been a fashion. Even those without gray hair do dye their hair to look different but I've not done such because I know it will ruin my hair in the long run. I do have some gray hair already but not enough for me to look old so I just leave them alone and perhaps when time comes that they already covered my whole head then I would dye but will make sure I will use a natural dye.

i got my hair dyed last week in burgundy and it looks great on me. it's my first time to have my hair dye, because i had apprehensions before. i am afraid it will destroy my hair. but i learned that there's a lot of ways to have my hair dyed and maintain it's health. i just need to have it treated every week, i am also using hair treatment shampoo's right now, just to make sure that i won't have damage hair for the next few months and have regrets at the end.

I tried to dye my hair with the help of my friend because she knows what to do. My hair is color black. That time I feel so bored having a black hair because most of the girls have a dyed hair. I feel so left out because of that. Then I dyed my hair into brown. My friends did say that it looks good on me. It did last for a few months because my black hair is starting to grow so part of my hair is color black and I don't like the way it looks. So I asked my friend to dye my hair again into black for a change so that I will look different at least from most of the girls. Then they did say again that it looks good on me. That time I was so confused. I don't know what hair color fits me. Haha Then I stick to black hair. I just find the right haircut and the right make up for me to look pretty at least with my black hair.
