Hello my friend here in mylot... actually joining mylot is my first time of joining complete discussion, socializing and participation. Even in chatting in the chat room of various social networking I never done, only family chatting which normally doing everyday may be because I'm away from my family. In some instances making blogs I have but in my native language I used. Why I never do that before since my intire work are connected to internet or online? One of my fear was affraid of my english, yes before I totally affraid that my english never understand by others, may be my grammar are annoying, may be they laugh on me.. those are the barriers in myself.
But when I started here and everybody welcome me, I found, I can excel my english to better. How about you my friend what are your experienced about your english? Or you still ashame your english? Share to us... see you around

Hi visavis...
You are not the only one who had this fear. Me, too. I mean i had also this fear before joining to mylot. Mylot was the first site where i tried to write english. A colleague of english department from my college gave the information about mylot and helped me in improving my english. Later i have been helped by all the mylotters around here. I know, my english is not perfect till date but hope is there that i will be able to write good english by the help of all of you. Thanks to mylot. Have a nice day.

I too yeah, sometimes I have to recheck to see if my grammar is correct. I haven't been in an exclusive school that offers a thorough training, I read a lot of books to improve myself. Writing blogs and being exposed in forums like this also adds up.

English is my first language, and there are moments I surprise myself at what I had written!
George Bernard Shaw wrote a play, "Pygmalion," that the film "My Fair Lady" was based on. It is about an English language professor who taught a lower-class woman to speak eloquent aristocratic English, (that is one of the highest class) and one of the theories some characters had about her origin after her teaching was that she must be a foreigner because her English was so perfect, without any flaw!
With all the dialects and others learning, it is my opinion that those who criticizes your English, (unless they are your English teacher, of course,) they have no place in civilized discussion. Anyone with average intelligence can see what you are communicating. And on myLot, that is all that matters. At least to me.

I am not really confident with my english when it comes to the corporate world especially when it comes to speaking. Since English is not my native language, I can't really speak it fluently in conversations but sometimes, i do. It depends on how frequent I use English in speaking. In terms of grammar for writing, I think that is just fine with me though sometimes i have lapses on the subject-verb agreement. I just type whatever I wanna say with out thinking about the the singular and plural of verbs and the tense structures. There is always room for improvement so it is just fine for me. I am practicing on it so that i could compete with others. ^_^

thank you rav... I feel good with your compliments. Anyway, regarding that book, can i download it in the internet?? i'm rehearsing myselk in speaking it with correct grammar.. because when i converse or say speaking it, I am conscious with what i am speaking. My boyfriend told me that i should not be conscious with how i speak so that I could not feel nervous about it..

Well, dear visavis. I remember when I was child (at about nine), my mother pushed me to take a private english course in my neighbor. My neigbor was an punjab girl (Indian). At that time, I wasn't impressed to much by English because I prefer to playing around at my afternoon time with my friends. But at the moment, I really adored US too much because there're so many people I admired there like Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone's actor, Tom Cruise, Michael Jackson and so on). I just dreamed to go to US one day. I realize that English is gonna be my "paspor" too. So, I was famous in my "not bad English" in my Junior High and Senior High, although finally
I graduated as Mathematics-Science student. I think, we have to find out why we must learn something before it :-)

Well, I am not saying that I am very good with my English, but I am confident of my English. Luckily, I went to school and English was the main language use. From my Grade 1 days up to my college days. We also had several English subjects which improve my English. Well, do not worry, about yours, for as long as you got the determination and the willingness to improve, you will surely end up learning more and improving. Best to you and keep on posting here. I am sure that this is one great venue to improve.

Hiya visavis,
Don´t ever be ashamed of your English. Why should you be after all I cannot speak your Language either that puts me in the same boat really.
The more mistakes you make the better and you will see how you made them and how to correct them.
That is how I learned Spanish. I made a lot of mistakes as I had to live with the People themselves and had no one to teach me in particular so I made all sorts of trip ups before I learned it and I am still learning as the language is always changing as well.
Once my Husband sent a letter to England and he forgot to give it to me to correct it for him.
Back came a very sarcastic corrected letter with the mistakes pointed out.
The letter was very good actually brilliant but some smart person over there in England decided he needed another course of some kind in English.
Needless to say I put pen to paper and left them shamed.
I wrote the letter as if I was him and sent it off I also added on the end if any of those smarty pants that did that knew how to speak Spanish as well as he spoke English.
One of them sent him a letter of apology for that kind of behaviour but only because I wrote them such a perfett letter it was impeccable.
That was one in the Nose for them.
I have never seen such silly behaviour like that before just for a couple of spelling slip ups you see in English we don´t put a double l en the end of most things and in Spanish double LL are used an awful lot. So hence the confusion and Spanish is Phonetical and English is not.

Hi visavis,
Keep on trying. Good communication is the essence of human relationships and the desire to be understood is the first thing that should be. There are levels of speaking a language and it takes time to master it.
As long as you are understood, there should be no problem, but to speak and write well, is a plus to anything you are trying to say.
English is not my native language and I admit, I am not too well-versed with it but I think I can pass, at least, to some native English-speaking people out there.

There's nothing to be ashamed of if your main language is not English. I can barely speak English correctly myself and its the only language I do know. After time you'll learn to speak it better, just give it time.

Hi visavis,
I also feel embarrassed by my english. Sometimes I do not dare to speak and write in english for fear of being wrong. Maybe you have input for me to improve my english ?

When I just completed my schooling, I was good at writing but spoken was pathetic. I use to have lot of problems speaking in english, but gradually made up my mind to work on improving my english. Now I am capable of speaking english and good at drafting letter which is appreciated with most of them. I would like to thank myself for such an improvement and the way I have taken it ahead.

hello friend,
Since we are not English native speakers, expect the imperfection with our grammar and communication skills.
With the nature of my work, speaking English and conversing with English people is not easy, but believe me my friend, they speak simple English.
Maybe the only reason why it give us some hard time understanding them is they speak with intonation due to right pronunciation.
The problem with what we've learned from school is,we are just using 5 vowel sounds, where in Americans uses more than 15 vowel sounds,
that makes our pronunciation incorrect.
When it comes to grammar, you don't need to worry with it,just be specific with the right usage of past, present and future tenses then you are good, everyone can understand your sentence.
I am not also good with English speaking, but practice makes our communication better.
Happy Holiday

Hello,Visavis.:)
I can see that you are from the Philippines.Magandang hapon, Kababayan.:)
We shouldn't feel intimidated using the English language nor be ashamed when we speak or write with grammar errors unless we are writing a technical report or a book or a case study or something that needs to be graded.LOL. As long as we can convey the message we want to share, then, it is not a big deal really.:)
I was exposed to the English language at an early age, even before I went to school, so I had no difficulties understanding and using it along side with Tagalog(my dialect is Visaya).I even excelled in the subject without much effort during school days.
Then, I became a mother and a wife. I stopped working. I hardly have enough time to read ,but instead busied myself with the house chores and kids. Now, i am one of those who often commits the most common mistake in using the English language, GRAMMAR ERRORS.:)
just continue what you are doing, read more English written articles or watch english shows, you will get the hang of it sooner.:)

Well I honestly will be more ashamed if I could not speak well in my own mother tongue language. As for English, I'm not afraid and ashamed because that is the only way to learn more and sharpen our grammar, pronunciation, and so on. I'm always happy for anyone to correct me anytime because it is not my native language anyway, it is just that I love it and I'm interested in many languages including English. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.

I would probably be more afraid of my spelling then my English. English is my first language, and I am not afraid to express myself, or how I feel about a particular topic. These days I have become very passionate about the economy, and the things that people in Washington are doing to get the economy going. You should not be afraid of your English it will get better.
