It depends on what your price range is I guess. The first car I bought was a junker, a 92 Cutlass Supreme (Oldsmobile) - but boy was it a race car! I would say go with something that has 4 cylinders (AKA good mileage) and something by a reliable brand, like Toyota or Saturn I've had good experiences with. The older ones (like 94's) are cheap and at least in my case, have both lasted me quite a while.

The first thing its just your taste. If you like racing, off-roading, comfort?? maybe a combination. I personally like big sedans, since theyre a good combo on power and comfort. It al depends on what you want.
The second thing you have to consider (and probably goes without saying) is the costs on the vehicle, what are your possibilites as for the money, and i dont mean just the price tag.. you have to take a look at mileage, prices on spare parts, services, etc.
maybe if you told us a bit about your taste and what your budget is, itd be easier to give you a more accurate suggestion.
Grettings!
