Class War: Why aren't more Americans concerned about the middle class?

Recently I came across a speech by a Virginia Senator addressing the issue of the dieing middle class in America. He distinctly states some interesting facts, that since the 1960's the top 1%of the America socioeconomic hierarchy has increased the amount it it earns over the lower 50% of Americans by 23%. 83% of the income made in America came from the upper 1% in 2009. They are still being giving tax cuts, while the middle class is being burdened more and more with our national debt.
Now I don't only find these numbers disgusting, but also disheartening to hear that the middle class is dieing as the upper class grows richer. Is this the fate of our country of the free? to have the elitist ruling class slowly drive us all into poverty only to slave for them, earning them more wealth. Why don't more Americans understand that we need to take action and even the playing field? Why don't more Americans in the middle class organize and demand a livable wage as well as more opportunity for class advancement? Tell me your thoughts, I would love to hear them.

I can speculate why. I think the reason is that people are busy with their own life like always. I have lived in the US for 5 years and I don't feel the sense of community that much so I think that it wouldn't be surprising that the Americans don't care about others they only care about themselves. It's an individualistic nation so it's just the way it is. That is how I think it.
