Gay Marriage: General Opinions and Possible Solutions

My own opinion on gay marriage is that government shouldn't be able to process marriage in the first place (being that it is a religious sacrament first and foremost) and that it should only be able to declare civil unions for all couples. Since marriage is primarily a traditionally Christian affair, should activists be petitioning that institution? Aren't Civil Unions technically a marriage?

The institution of marriage is universal and existed before Christianity came into existence. It isn't always a religious affair, and it certainly isn't "primarily" Christian. There have been times and places, and maybe there still are, where a marriage is a bond between two people, without any regard to government or religion. If two people consider themselves married, that should be entirely their business. Neither government nor religion should have any say in it.

I agree, it shouldn't be part of a governmental agenda. But the problem is that the institution of marriage holds certain financial and legal roles, I'm not talking about the love aspect, homosexual and hetersexual relationships alike, a marriage should be based off mutual respect and love, but the statement of being married has higher implications.
