Why is the Call Of Duty game series so popular!? Like, why do people like it?

It just seems weird to me that a stupid video game can be that popular. But, what's so good about that specific game? Is it fun to play? I'm confused

This game series have one of the best storylines. Also some great plots and historic places. Its gameplay is also great.
