Marshmallow is a soft, puffy or spongy candy. These days it is made from sugar, gelatin and flavourings but, traditionally, it was made using the juice from the root of the Marsh Mallow plant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Althaea_officinalis
It probably began as a medicinal compound used to treat sore throats but, like many medicines, became used as a confection.
I am surprised that, having had such a long history, it is not popular in India (where I know that many delicious sweet confections are popular).

It's solid but it is soft candy. It taste sweet but sometimes eating to much makes me sick of it. My sister loves it.
