Do you think it's good the internet has so much music?

Let's face it; there's a lot of music on the internet. Through such fabulous sites as Spotify, and of course You Tube, you can listen to a quantity of music that you could only dream of hearing in the pre-internet age. Then, unless you taped music off the radio, you had to save up, get your shoes on and tramp up to the nearest record shop if you wanted to hear music you craved. Nowadays, it's all there for you. For me, that's a positive plus and then some, because it's enabled me to hear albums that decades back I'd have never been able to hear, because I couldn't afford to buy the albums. Time was, I only heard a fraction of the music that was available at any given time. Now, I can hear it all if I so choose, and had the time! What do you think? Do you think it's wonderful that you can hear as much music your heart desires. Has it stopped you buying CDs? Is that a good thing? Do you think there's too much music? Or just enough? Let's talk music.

I think it is wonderful! With You Tube , you have gotten me to listen to groups and songs I wouldn't have been able to! I remember one of our talks where I knew one version of a song and you another. With the help of You Tube , we got to hear both! I also think it is great for the teens out there. Instead of being stuck knowing Only the cover of a song or a the sample of a song in a rap song, they can log in and hear the original!

Yes Sarah I did, it's true. Yes; true. I remember the first ever (I think) major Rap mega-hit; "The Crown". Was based on one of my favourite ever Soul/Disco songs, "Good Times" by Chic.

Oops...I'm sorry; I confused "Rapper's Delight" with "I Wear the Crown". Silly me...

I remember. I prefer Good Times by Chic. It took me Forever to give hip hop my full attention. It was like opera, I Thought it wasn't for me but now I can listen and appreciate both.

I think it is bad for the music business but to me it's a good thing as I'm not in the music business. I stopped buying CD's after knowing the downloading capabilities of a computer with internet connection.

Thanks for responding, yes I agree, it's bad for the music business. It's good for me too, and I don't buy CDs any more. But if I could afford to, I feel I'd still buy CDs, because while it's wonderful to hear music when you want, there's something special about owning your own copy of a treasured album. But I'm not rich, so the internet serves me fine.

What I don't like about buying CD's is that I have to pay for the songs i wasn't really intending to buy. But with the internet there are better option for buying but I rarely buy like once a year and that is rare.

Yes, that happened so much. You get a CD home and much of it is awful. With the internet, you can hear an album first, and then if you really like it and can afford it, you can buy it. I like that choice.

Oh wow, I totally agree with you on this one! I am so thankful for the internet. One of the things I'm thankful about is music. I am a fan of a Japanese pop group. When I became a fan in 1999, it's only through the internet that I get to hear their music. It's really awesome.
Earlier this year, my mom was reminiscing about songs that she used to hear on the radio during her college years. She's looking for those songs in record shops but she can't find them. We then went to a store and under the name of their store is "Music Library". We went inside and saw vinyl records along with CDs. She found them all there and was wanting to but them but the store wasn't selling any of those. They were recording the songs maybe through a machine and transferring them to audio CDs. I thought "why pay them when it's widely available on the internet?" Even though the store has old records, I still think it's illegal to redistribute the songs that way. My mom was almost going to "purchase the songs" but I told her not to because it's all "free" on the internet. When we got home, I searched YouTube and we found almost everything she wanted to hear again. One of her favorites is The Commodores. Because she liked some of their songs, I looked for a CD online and bought it for her birthday. She was so happy. By the way, I forgot to mention that my mom is not computer literate. ^.^'
I try to buy CDs when I can. However, if I only like one song from an entire CD, I might just download the song off the net. Because I don't live in the US, I can't purchase songs through iTunes nor Amazon. I wish their services were international so that I can purchase songs legally and I am willing to do so because musicians have great works and I'd love to support them when I can.
Nice topic! Have a nice day!

Thank you and thanks for a great answer! It's true, when you especially like a band, or a CD, you want to own it personally, not just listen to it. I'm with your mom on the Commodores. I like their music a lot too! Obviously "Easy" is a great favourite of many! But I like "Still" too...and others. Yes, it's true...there are music forms and bands I'd have never heard about had it not been for the internet. I am all for the present situation, and wouldn't change it. But some would disagree with me; possibly many.

I think it's absolutely great how internet has contributed so much to music. In the past we could only access to local music and millionaire bands through the radio, but nowadays we can listen to music all over the world, and many amateur bands have gone pro thanks to that. I didn't buy music in the past because cassette tapes were expensive, and cds too when they appeared, and I still don't buy music because the prices are abusive in my opinion, unless it's some record I really want to have.
Internet being full of music haven't changed my attitude regarding buying music, as I wasn't going to buy cds anyway, but thanks to the internet my interest in music has gotten bigger and has leaded me to go to the band's concerts, as the live experience is better than the recorded one.
Without being able to access to music in the internet, I would probably have never gone to those concerts.

Hi! I am with you in expanding accessibility of music via internet. I am able to listen to music in whatever genre I like. Plus also for music students who are able to search assigned music if it is not available in their school library. The downside is--anybody can upload music interpreted their own way in any instrument. And for those who may not know or knows little of music would think the one he/she is listening to is good music or even great. Affect discrimination in taste. But generally, I go for accessibilty as I cannot afford to buy CDs unless they are on sale.
Happy new year, CarlHalling.
