I used to eat mangoes for free and they were good.

I used to live in the Philippines and my dad owns a mango plantation and the mangoes that doesn't meet the export quality standards or the harvest is ruined by a storm always ends up in our house. That is why I had the best mangoes ever. Eating them as is, making mango floats or whatever I may think of making them into is always good especially sharing them with the people in the community. Now, living in this imperialist nation of the United States of America, I am deprived of such opportunity because they don't or can't have/ grow those kind of mangoes here and they're not free. I miss our mangoes. But now I found Persimmon as a substitute and it isn't bad but it is still does not compare to the mango I used to have, it's not even mango. I love mango and I miss it. Is this homesickness?

Ah! Reading your post makes my mouth water. I am thinking of the green, unripe ones though, dipped in soy sauce or shrimp paste. I miss our mangoes. I tried the mangoes here, and they weren't nice. Not even close to our local ones. Probably that's one of the things I would like to do when I go home, buy a green mango and eat to my heart's content haha!

Yeah but where in the philippines? I never tried mangoes in soy sauce, this is the first time that I heard someone is dipping mangoes in soy sauce. I just find it interesting, so is it just you who use soy sauce in mangoes or is it like a common thing in your place?

I am from the Philippines as well. Soy sauce is "Toyo" (hi hi I think you know what I mean now). Green mangoes with salt is fine, but dipping it in soy sauce/shrimp paste is divine. I am currently in the UK. So far, I haven't seen any native mangoes here. The ones I have tasted weren't good at all.

My late grand father use to own a small mango plantation too in Sta.Barbara in Pangasinan but it was sold already a long time ago since nobody would manage it, I remember sacks of mangoes arriving in our house when I was a kid when we got our share and they were the best mangoes I ever tasted in my whole life! Other places that produce the best mangoes I tasted came from Guimaras Island and Zambales. We still have a mango tree in front of our house even today.

We have a land caretaker left to tend our plantation while we are away. I used to live near Zambales and yeah they do have good mangoes, I have never tried the Guimaras ones Is it a different variety or the same thing ? Here in the US they don't have the Mangoes I like. They do produce what they call Philippine Mango but it was grown in Mexico and it isn't that good or that sweet for my liking plus they're kind of small unlike the ones we had.

Yeah Ive heard about that, mangoes being passed on as Philippine mangoes that the government even had to file a protest. Now back to mangoes, I think the best mangoes we have are of the "kalabaw" variety, maybe tastes differs only because of quality of soil or water from province to province or amount of sunlight that's why mangoes of one province taste better than others. The mango tree in my house is the "supsupin" variety, not much market value because it is so small but the seed is large "pansarili lang"(for own consumption) but it is so sweeeet, one of the sweetest, maybe if it can be cross bred with the bigger variety.
