The Banana Trade War

Bananas are globally one of the most commonly eaten fruit, not just in the tropics where they are usually grown, but in regions like North America and Europe. However, the way bananas are produced and exported gives an insight into the number of global issues.
Some workers work very long hours, sometimes exposed to hazardous chemicals, some which are often banned fromnations with betterability to provide for worker safety, such as in the US and Europe.
What do you think of this fact? Did you even know of this?

Yeah, but don't you think something has to be done about this, I mean they're all people so I think they should have the same rights as all people have. I mean they're totally exploited in these companies. They work hours and hours and barely get any money or none at all!

some have tried maybe not in the banana feilds but in sweat shops like in China where they work people like mules with little or no pay.
Yes things should be done but when ya get one company to get safety regulations another company pops up with unsafe measures

Hiya destiny,
As you might know the Bananas we have here are brought in from the Canary Islands and from other places like Morocco.
We have heard of these kind of things before too but seeing as though you would wish the Money to go to the hard working People it always seems to end up in someone else´s pockets instead of theirs.
We cannot control either the comings and goings of what they do. Just hope that what we buy benefits the Workers in some way.
It really is a subject we don´t know much about here but we really should know. I tend to buy from the two brands and that way they might get an equal amount of earnings.
I know they do work really long hours and I wish that they did not have to. Nowadays this sort of thing should have been abolished.

Hiya destiny,
Me personally I would like to be able to buy more Bananas really as I love them too. Yes buying two different brands helps them both I think. From what I can see from the past Documentaries about the Plantations and the People who work on them they all get pretty much the same money which is not a lot for the very long hours they work.
I do the same thing with other Fruit I try to buy both kinds of brands and that way I feel it´s much fairer. Well at least that is my idea.

First off thanks alot for your comment.
It is true that we should really know some more about this subject, but I guess it's just not that easy. If it was, I guess it would have been done by now..
It's a nice thing you try to really make the best of it buying from different brands etc. It's a nice little thing more people should try doing.
It's probably just not as easy as it might seem to get rid of such a terrible problem.

No, i didn't know. But hard labor often isn't paid enough.
There was a tv programs once that showed the banana plantations.
I remember that people seemed very poor, but what shocked me was that they were willing to kill the monkeys so they will not steal even few bananas from trees...
That shows i guess how hard life there was.

yeah I guess people will do anything these days to get some money out of something. It's weird how people earn so little and are willing to do anything to get it, and actually seem satisfied when they do it.. Dont you think?
Thanks for your comment & happy holidays!

It would be great if there was something we could do about it, but I think it's really hard to prevent all of this happening, as it is happening on quite a large scale. I think the least we can do is try and buy these fair trade products as much as possible, this as thereby we support the campaign.

The problem you've raised is actually quite actual. There are many people around the world (mostly in developing countries) who have to work in very insufficient and hard conditions. Their working day is not regulated and the pay they receive is just hilarious. However, these are the countries which serve as a starting base for huge companies who are looking for a very cheap work force and want to get as large profit as possible. And no-one even cares about the workers. China, Pakistan, Bangladesh...There are many of these countries where peoples payments cannot even be compared to the ones of European or US workers. Nike, Adidas, many electronics companies and many other manufacturers take advantage of these poor people. That's very disturbing.
If you want to help that, try looking for goods with "fair trade" markings in the stores, these goods are produced by companies, that are paying fair wage to their workers and keep an eye on the environmental balance in their work area.

thanks a lot for your comment.I guess you're right about the fair trade products, they can really help getting people a better life, a better salary, and good working circumstances. There is probably a lot more of this going around the world but I guess we can't ever find it all and make it all better. Thank you for your comment and happy holidays

Nice one here no doubt . After all who cares for those who provide us with all those crops
I did not know much about the banana industry but I am aware of the Health Hazards that these farmers face each day using those chemicals and pesticides on other crops...
While eating these products many a times I think, we are more into intake of Harmful Chemicals and Pesticides than the real food. I feel like I am an insect and should stay away from eating those
Unfortunately the so called organic foods are still quite a distant dream in many countries and where they are they are expensive and not easily available... so I think we all have to wait till these modern technologies come up with some chips/circuits that would let go of the need for food all together
Cheers,
theSids.

yeah I get what you're saying and it's just terrible at all these things are happening without us being able to do something about it. you often wonder what' happening over there, but all we can do is guess or go check it out and try to make it better, but this would be quite hard I guess. Thanks a lot for your comment and happy holidays to you

yeah but I guess people get exploited a lot in the countries that don't have human right like they should have. I think some people just work really hard for the money and get paid only little, that's unfair if you ask me. I really think something has to be done to avoid this from happening. Thank you for your comment and happy holidays

yeah this is what I ask myself all the time and I mean what are they thinking doing this to people who earn just as much right as they do. I can't believe how people are able to do this. Organizations like Amnesty are doing a really great job trying to protect these people. thank you for your comment and happy holidays
