http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/40661756/ns/today-today_people Now here is a doctor I'd be proud to visit!!!! Dr. Russell Dohner of Rushville IL is one doctor who believes in the Hippocratic Oath. For the last 55 years he has worked 7 days a week, being available 24 hours a day to any & all that need him!!! Dr. Dohner lives in a town of 4,300 people about 58 miles from the Missouri state line. He doesn't believe in taking a day off because somebody might get sick & need him. His dream is to see Missouri when he can find the time. As I said, he lives only 58 miles away from the Missouri state line. Part of Dr. Dohner's staff are children he has delivered & treated most of their lives. The guy who cuts his grass does it for free as Dr. Dohner saved his life & then only charged his normal, every day fee. He feels that cutting Dr. Dohner's yard is the least he can do for such a wonderful man. Dr. Dohner doesn't throw away his old medical instruments just to replace them with new ones. They are only replaced when they break. He still has the furniture he bought when he first opened his practice. Many of his nurses have been with him since he first opened his office. Several of the towns people volunteer their time in order to say thank you to such a great man!!! Oh yes, I forgot to mention, Dr. Dohner ONLY charges $5.00 a visit no matter what is wrong with you!!!! He NEVER turns a sick person away!!!! The ONLY time he has taken off work was when he broke his back & had a heart attack. I would LOVE to visit this man just so I could shake his hand!!!! As many of you know, I have NO use for doctors; however, I'd gladly go to this one!!!! Have you ever heard of such a caring & giving doctor??? If so, please share!!!

Hello & WELCOME TO MYLOT!!! When he was growing up it was very common for people to help their neighbors when needed. His parents must have instilled some GREAT ethics in him!!!! And it's obvious that he LOVES his job!!!

Wow, that's like a trip back in time! I would love to meet this man but he probably doesn't have the time for a chat. I don't expect a doctor to charge that little or put their life on hold for their vocation but I would dearly love to see more of this type of dedication. I think if we had more people like this doctor the world would be a better place and attitudes would change.

We are close enough to the same age that we both remember when people like this were commonplace!!! I wouldn't want to waste his time chatting. However, I would LOVE to shake his hand & say THANK YOU!!! It saddens me to think of the health care his patients will receive once he passes on...not to count the shock for the difference in cost!!!! Many who have received excellent care will no longer be seeing a doctor. His town realizes this & they are taking really good care of him as he has no wife nor family. There is a dentist in my town that had a thriving practice throughout his life. Since he retired & turned his practice over to his son, he dedicates 4 days a week to an orphanage about 2 hours away. The 5th day he uses a room at his son's office & gives FREE dental care to the local children whose parents are out of work. I thought he was my hero until this morning when I heard of Dr. Dohner!!!!

He sounds almost too good to be true LadyM. I would be interested to know what regard other members of his profession hold him in. Slightly dotty but a good-hearted man - or pulling them down into the mire of cheap healthcare. I wuld worry that he's never found time to travel the 58 miles to the neighbouring state and that his own health has suffered. How well does he look after himself? But all in all I take my hat off to him. He is an example that others would do well to follow. Not just in medicine either.

You miss my point LadyM. I am genuinely astonished that he should be so philanthropic in this day and age and I wish that more were like him. But - my concern is that a man who never stops can do more damage than good especially to himself. That has nothing to do with his prices or the loyalty that he engenders in others. I can recall doctors that came at the drop of a hat, but they had holidays too. Here in the UK we are very fortunate in that a. healthcare is free; b. Doctors will (usually under suffrance) make housecalls and our emergency care is amongst the best in the world. My chest was cut by a Cardiological physiotherapist nurse not a Dr but I do take your point. I am saying that I think that he is wonderful but he has to take a holiday or will damage his own health - which seems to have happened already.

I find your comments disheartening!!! He grew up in a time when people helped each other without regard for themselves. He obviously LOVES his job or he wouldn't work so much. God has blessed him with the knowledge & heart to take care of an entire town!!! Yes, his health has suffered in the process as he had a heart attack. What happened??? The entire town took care of him until he got better. This is the attitude I grew up with & it makes me cry that it has been so completely lost!!! His need to see Missouri is far less than his need to take care of his patients & I admire him, for that!!! I also admire him for putting his patients BEFORE the almighty dollar!!!! My guess is that had he been your doctor recently, your chest would NOT have been cut during the prep!!! I don't wonder what regard other members of his profession hold him in as much as I wonder in what regard he holds them??? How long has it been since you heard of a doctor who makes house calls...and on a Sunday no less????

It is indeed a wonderful story. I appreciate his dedication, but I also worry for the man! Even in the past, I don't know of any other doctor that had his clinic open 24/7! BUt really no doctor should turn a sick person away just because they are unable to pay. The only legitimate reason a doctor could turn a person away is when he does not have what it takes to help him. But then again back to the topic, its good that people in his neighborhood can enjoy the benefit of hi dedication

I think you misread what I was saying. He doesn't keep his clinic open 24/7. I said he was available 24 hours a day & he opens his clinic 7 days a week. The link states that he takes every Thursday afternoon off to go fishing, but he wears a suit & tie & he keeps a phone close by just in case his services are needed. When he started his practice back in 1955, he charged $5 a visit. He has NEVER raised his prices & 55 years later he's still charging $5 per visit. Most people would tire of working as much as he does, but I know a few people who thrive on working that hard!!! It's not just his neighborhood that enjoys the benefit of his dedication, it's the ENTIRE town he lives in & the surrounding area!!! You are correct...NO doctor should turn a sick person away!!! However, it is happening more frequently than ever before. If they can't make between $300-500 an hour working on you, they don't want to take any time helping you. I just find it remarkable that this guy is so willing to give of himself & help so many!!!! When my niece was born, the doctor realized it would probably be the wee hours of the morning before she would finally arrive. It didn't fit into his schedule so he began taking steps to rush her delivery. Well, i guess she just didn't want to be rushed, so she held on until 1:00 am. In rushing her delivery, he created a circumstance that was harmful to her health & almost killed her. I bet that Dr. Dohner would NEVER take such actions!!!!

wow. It's difficult to see such doctors nowadays.I haven't met anyone like this, but I made it to a point that I would become one such doc after I finish my post graduation. For such doctors,it's the satisfaction they value above all other wordly things. To such doctors only, the people are attached not only physically but emotionally as well. There is a need of more of such doctors.Hats of to all such doctors.
