I have been always a cat lover since I was a small boy. Funny thing is up to now I have not owned a male cat that has three colors on its fur. I also asked my cat loving friends if they have owned one and they also responded to the negative. It is only female cats that I owned that had three colors. Could you guys tell me if ever you have owned a three color cat? Thanks

I sort of think you may have a calico cat as I think that they have distinct yellow, orange and white coloring. I havce seen them but never
owned one my self. they claim they are very docile and loving too.I
always had a pure black cat myself. now I cannot have pets here.

My response was posted by the poster above...except she had more info that me. All I knew was that calicos are usually female because it is linked to the X chromosome so male calicos are rare. I didn't know all the "male" calicos were XXY genetic "errors".
I thought there was something similar with tortoiseshells too.

its a genetics thing...
the "red" gene and the "black" gene are both dominate genes, and they are both on the "X" chromosome. So, the ONLY way you would get a "male" cat with 3 colors would for that cat to be an "XXY" male and most of the time sterile.

I have worked with animals for over 10 yrs. now and in that time we have only seen one male calico in this clinic they are rare. we spay and neuter alot of animals here, we found out when we shaved her\his belly and then looked down. that poor boy hand to go home with no fur on his tummy.
so yes they are rare and it just goes to show never judge a book by its cover.
