Do you have a favourite cookery book and why?

I am NOT a lover of TV chef Jamie Oliver but and when my friend bought me the book 'Cook with Jamie' I wasn't that impressed. However I have to say that after reading it I really love the book. It has aboiut 175 recipes in it and they are all explained really easily. This is a great book for all standards of cooks from beginners to expert and I would really recommend it!!

Hello, Mandy. I'm not a great lover of JO either, but at least he gets people cooking and, more importantly, interested in nutrition. My personal favourite is one of Delia Smith's very early books - the Delia Smith Cookery Course. It's such a great book, because every recipe is explained in detail, and all the background is filled in. I've never had a failure, and that's saying something, as I've used it for Christmas cakes and puddings, cooking goose and duck for the first time, and my husband's favourite steak and kidney pudding. When we moved to Spain, I got rid of a lot of books - including cookery books - but Delia crossed the Channel with us. It's one book I wouldn't be without.

I love cookery books but have not tried any of Jamie Oliver's as I have to admit to not being his number one fan!!! I have tons of books but I often go back to a really old Reader's Digest one that was my mum's it is a real old friend to me. It is looking a little the worse for wear now but I wouldn't be without it!!

That's the one 'Cookery Year' !! The book is arranged month by month and gives you the right dish for every occasion from the fresh foods that are in season that month; there are some really unusual recipes in it. Mine dates back from the 70's although I think it has been revised since and that there is a 'New Cookery Year' It's a great book and if you ever see it at a sale or charity shop you MUST get it!!

That's the one - very large and with a hard back, it is a really good book that one!

It wouldn't be that one that is divided into months, a big rectangular one? My mum has that and I can remember cooking things out of it as a teenager!!

Not too long ago I wasn't keen on Jamie Oliver, but just lately I've been watching his "Cook a Meal in Half an Hour" show here in Australia, and I must admit I am hooked! He does have an unusual style, but his recipies are so down to earth and he doesn't use fancy ingredients. My favourite recipe book would have to be an old Be-Ro book that my mother gave to me - probably 40 years ago! It still has the old price on it of 1/6d (one and sixpence)UK. It's tattered stained from use, but I still use it, the recipies are easy to follow and wholesome. . . Thanks Mum!

My mum actually has an old 'Mrs Beaton's' book that belonged tpo her grandmother. It has some REALLY old fashioned recipes in it but the good old basics are still in it.

I don´t cook by cook books anymore and haven´t done it for a long time. But once in a while I like to have a sort of "corversation" with a cookbook I like. The best for me is The Joy of Cooking. It has absolutly everything you want to cook, teches you about measuring, setting the table and other related things and it is a clasic.

It is my cooking Bible although I don´t live in the US and my native language is not English. My two daughters learned English in due time and I gave them The Joy as part of my wedding presents for them when they got married.

I believe that that is a US 'bible' of cookery!! I have to admit to have never seen it!

I was talking recently with someone and I realized that I rely most on the old Better Homes and Gardens cook book with a red plaid cover. It explains well and has plenty of recipes that are good for everyday cooking but they also can be fancy for a special occasion.
