So i tried the WoW Cataclysm trial a few days ago and I'd like to continue playing it, but unfortunately no stores near my place of living sell it. So I'm wondering whether i should go for a digital purchase? What exactly is a digital purchase, does that mean that the game will be downloaded to my computer directly? And what happens if i eventually decide to format my PC, will i have full access to my account upon installing it once more?

Yes, and yes.
Info will be installed on your computer directly.
The purchase is saved to your account. Done that way so if you get a new PC or reformat your current one you can download it again free of charge.
