Well, I afraid to see the dentist, not because I afraid of hurt, or she will pull my teeth out. I just afraid of embarrassment. My dentist keep telling me that I have this hygiene problem with my teeth. But I do my best to keep flossing my teeth everyday, after meals. And I am willing to brush my teeth 2 times a day. I just don't know what went wrong on this. It seems that method I used to floss my teeth wasn't effective at all. I had all these cavities, and I just do so much filling already. Today, I received call again from the dentist office for next week appointment confirmation. I just afraid again that she disappoint with my hygiene upkeep. What would you usually do to keep your teeth cleaned?

PLease dont be afraid of the dentist. I am a dnetal student myself, and trust me, we have to spend a lot of time learning how to calm patients, analgeisa, and stuff like that. The harsh irony of it is, a study suggested that the average person in the average day will experience "pain" worse than that of going to the dentist something like 10 time a day on average! But the thing is, you do not notice it. And the "fear" of the dentist causing something called allodynia, which is a reduced pain threshold, and so you expereince more pain than normal!

No, I just to shame to show my teeth to the dentist, and her assistants. Especially she got a hot assistant beside her, and with the condition of teeth, I just feel blush.

@ ninja:
I think you're right. I had a lot of shame scenarios when I visit my dentist for extraction. Once I fainted after one tooth was pulled. Before I entered I tried to control my emotion but my heart was beating faster. When the doctor tried to pull my tooth I felt pain so I made a noise and she waited more minutes thinking that my anesthesia wasn't penetrating yet. After I had it, gone out from the room. I talked to my aunt and suddenly I lose my sight and found myself lying in a couch. lol! I will never forget it.... but now trying still to become calm whenever I had extraction.

If you really see a problem with your teeth maybe you should have your saliva checked. As strange as it sounds, some people have a condition with sticky saliva that causes more calories than what other people get. I know of this because my roommate in college had this. She had to have a special toothpaste and went to the dentist more often than others do. If you see bleeding a lot, do not take it for granted, I had lots of bleeding when I was a child and had severe periodontal disease caused by debris under the gumline from me falling a lot. I had to go to a periodontist and have the bad gum tissue cut away so new could grow in. It is much easier to take care of problems before they happen.

I SWEAR I had already responded to this discussion. It looks like not. Ha. I used to be embarrassed to do the same. Even going to the nail place to get a pedicure was embarrassing because I didn't keep up my toes/feet very well. They're calloused, I have cuticles, etc. Not the perfect set of feet. Likewise i don't have the perfect set of teeth. I am more afraid of the pain than anything else, I need to go in and get a cap done. The main thing restricting me from doing so though is my schedule, which has totally been opposite of that of the dentist office's. I have a day off coming up soon though and I'm hopefully gonna get an appointment in there.
Oh, back to what i was saying, there should be NO reason to be embarrassed. I mean, these doctors and dentists and even pedicure-ists don't have any right to judge you or your teeth/feet/whatever. And moreso, you have to imagine - in their line of work you must know that they've seen TEN times worse. Even though it's a pain in the butt, and maybe a little embarrassing to you, you should go in regardless.

Hi kingprker
We can not help certain things. Even i face the same problem every time i visit my dentist. Daily i make it a habit of flossing in the night after brushing. Daily i will gargle several times after anything i eat, still cavities will do form.

Well I am afraid of going to the dentist too but for other reasons because they pulled out the wrong teeth and did hurt me in the past. In your case though just do as you are flossing twice a day and try to brush your teeth after every meal that is what I do and it helps especially since I have braces and my teeth are so crowded together. Don't be embarrassed when you go to the dentist though that is their job to help you to keep your teeth healthy and I am sure that yours are not that bad and I am sure they have seen much worse.

To keep your teeth or your mouth clean, just brush your teeth regularly,do the usual flossing, gargle with a good mouthwash & be sure to drink lots of water.Eating apples or pears will do wonders too. These fruits act as natural floss for those hard to reach areas in between teeth. If you follow these simple steps coupled with self-confidence, there's no reason for you to be afraid of the dentist. after all, her job is to help you with your dental problems & not to criticize you. It's what dentists are for.

Dear friend,
There is lots of ways here, from traditional to modern methods. The neem leafs and its steam are better used for keeping a better teeth here. Moreover usually we brush two times a day. Anyhow I feel if we take precautionary methods to keep our teeth better there would be less problems. A better guidance form dentist may be could help to avoid further going to dentists.

So many people have a fear of the dentist. It's not that the dentist will hurt you that brings this fear. it is the anticiapation of the visit itself.

Well, daily brushing won't help me anymore coz i'm a chain smoker. Last time i visited the dentist there were some mild problems with my teeth. I was thankful they were just mild but still, i've gotta stop smoking or else my teeth will be the least of my problems.
With regards to your problem, you should visit the dentist without thinking of that embarrassment you were talking about. Your teeth is one of the things that you need. Plus, you won't look good without a healthy teeth.

When we smile and talk our teeth expose. Hence, having a good set of them is a plus factor. Next week when you decide to go, ask your dentist about this concern as he/she knows better how to do with teeth. For the meantime, brushing and flossing every after meal would help.

I'm afraid of the Dentist too...they made me even more afraid when I saw a movie about a killer Dentist. It's not a total teeth hygiene problem at all for my part, it's just the needle or anything sharp that they put inside our mouth with our eyes open..it makes me freak out. I guess I'm kinda dentophobia or whatever the right term for that is.

Do not be afraid of the dentist! Dear Friend, First one to say "you're not alone!",thousands of people in the world who share the anxiety, fear or phobia of going to the dentist and you should not feel embarrassed! It is true that the teeth, breathing part of your overall appearance, is your card. They are "friends " with dentists. But despite the early visits, I still missed the feeling of fear and anxiety upon hearing that the device that cleans tartar for example ... What do I do to keep my teeth health and hygiene? Change your toothbrush often exaggerated(somewhere around 2 or 3 weeks),use toothpaste for sensitive teeth, or Paradontax Lacalle ... depends, and I brush my teeth morning and before bed at least!. So, good luck!

kingparker I am sure the dentist and the hygienist have seen even worst case scenarios. After all this is what keeps them in business.
So attend your appointment and keep telling yourself that you are not the only one and the dentist actually enjoy seeing many different forms of issues with teeth as this is why they enter the dental business.
Good luck.
