While choosing one player between the two offered I would like to list their abilities. Sachin bats well and can be aggressive. His eye and arm coordination is excellent. Runs faster between wickets. He can bowl and is a good fielder. He is also a good team man. Of late age has dented his batting prowess.
Lakshman on the other hand is a stylish stroke maker. Plays only judicious shots and exhibits the patience when needed. Running between wickets is far from satisfactory. Good closein fielder but fail in the outfield. Like Sachin he is also a team man. Age is also catching up and affecting his game.
With the above assessment I would still prefer Sachin. Lakshman is definitely a discard...

See guys first of all I am talking about test cricket and not the other formats. For a moment I want you guys to think from the captain's shoes. This is not about who is the best, it is about who would you have in your team in a test match. Just imagine the situation

Honestly speaking Sachin is the greatest and the world knows it. However, its Laxman's heroics that helped India to defend its number one spot for the past one year. Its been four series on a stretch that Laxman saved us starting with Srilanka(match saving century in the 2nd innings), Australia(match winning partnership with Ishant Sharma), New Zealand(match saving partnership with Harbhajan Singh after India struggled at 15/5) and ofcourse South Africa(match winning knock of 96 runs). So currently its VVS laxman.
