We are having two good players who score many valuable runs for the team in test cricket, but on differt time.
Sehwag scores maority of the runs in the first innigs, he scores quickly too.
he is a poor second innings player thats fact when you campare his stats.
In the same way the VVS laxman is the batsman who score the majority of the runs in 2nd innigs even when the team is following on.
VVS scores under pressure, where as Virus scoring on the 1st innings make the opposition under pressure.
but these two are very use full, in fact, the complementing talent of these two great test players has made the Indian team perfectly balanced.
although one of these tow may fail in one innigs this wont affect the team scoring due to the complement talent of the other.
I think this talent of VVS and Viru has been really a big advantage for India to become no:1 in test ranking(continues to be no:1).these two are two big assets of Indian team.

Viru's batting style makes him succeed in 1st innings. They call it dashing - well, we may call it 'rash' too. But that is how he bats and succeeds as an opening bat against pace bowlers. He can do the same even in second innings. His innings in either innings can last as long as it can last. Lakshman, though playing one down or two down, is more capable against spinners. I think if Indian innings lasts long after a good opening stand and the opponents depend on spinners Lakshman can do well even in 1st innings. It is true in recent times Lakshman has proved to be main stay to bring the defence in second innings patiently. So did Harbhajan too. Because of this you cannot brand Lakshman as only a 2nd innings player.

i dont mean that sehwag dont scores in second innigs or laxman dont scores in first innings.
majority of runs scored by these individuals have the nature of scoring more in 1st innigs by viru and 2nd innings the best for VVS.
these two are very good test players, no doubt in it.
sehwag scores quickly, when the pitch is fairly fresh,as you have called it dashing or rash runs.
and VVS plays the first innings, try to hang in there as much as possible, study the pitch well in 1st innings and score more in 2nd innings with the things he have learned by playing and reading the pitch in 1st innings.

Ya,Viru scores most runs in the first innings & VVS scores at 2nd innings better ,then India gets a good results.
Laxman has been fantastic in many pressure situations when India need to bat for a long time.
Sehwag helps india to score a good total quickly or to take a good lead.
Anyway its very good for india.
And this is a big advantage for India.

Actually our batting line up is really good. We have the likes of Sehwag who can attack and on pitches where there is not much to offer can take teams apart. On the other had we have batsmen who can defend well in Dravid. Laxman and Sachin can play both modes of games. With Laxman now specializing in the second innings match winning scores, we have suddenly become that much difficult to beat. So that is one of the main reason why we are number 1 in the world!!
Cheers!

Yea you rightly said that we have one of the best players of 1st and 2nd innings in test matches. Vvs is very good in playing good knocks in 2nd innings where sehwag really give a good and fast start to indian innings. They both complete the team. But sehwag is not available now which is a bad news. But he will be back soon. Happy mylotting. Regards, harry.

Lakshman is always rated high in terms of playing the most critical innings of a match.
I remember reading Devilliers column in the new paper after SA first innings .
He rated lakshman's wickets as the most important second innings wicket for SA.
It eventually turned out to be true.
