What do you do when someone borrows a book and doesn't return it. When it is a favorite book that you recommended or a book that you will need in future, and you tell him and ask a few time and they still do not return it?
Finally you feel awkward and stop bothering about it. But i always remember and feel offended. After all it was my favorite book.
Do you return the book when you borrow them?

Hi Lisander,
Both are on the wrong footing - the giver and the borrower.
First thing as far as possible do not give books to others not even your friends. Make excuse. Say you are presently reading the book.
And once you borrow a book do not return it. Books are great assets. Once you had a grab over one you have it.
This is the philosophy I usually follow.
Even my students do the same. They take book from library in my name and never return. lol

I have one avid reading friend who shares my taste in books, and we exchange books all the time. I borrow some from her, she borrows some from me, and the books always get read and get back home safe and sound. No problems whatsoever. And whenever someone lends a book to me I make sure that it gets back to its owner. It's common courtesy. The book rightfully belongs to someone else! lol
I have lent out books that never got back to me. One of them was part of a boxed set, so there was a very lovely gap in that boxed set until we found a replaced edition at a used bookstore. In that case the person that had the book had seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. Which was very rude of them. They should have brought the book back before they left the planet.

oh lol. they took the best of them when they left for moon))
Some people don't think that books are expensive enough to consider it stealing when they don't return it( they don't even think that they are someone' property. For them it's just some paper. Thats why most of them don't even bother to return them me thinks. they probably think that as borrowing some hair tie. u will not return that right?
Thats really awful that u have to search and buy again a book that you had to begin with.
I hope you see him again.
Have a nice day)

I've brought back borrowed hair ties and bobby pins! Nothings too cheap to be considered property needing to be returned.
You see the word "borrow" implies that you're going to give it back. If they wanted to keep something then they should have said, "Can I HAVE this?"
And thinking that books are merely paper and not expensive enough to need to be returned.... WHHA-A-A-A-T? Well I'm going to be giving them a good lecture the next time I see one of those goons. Well... if I ever see one of those goons. Apparently the one with my book is on the moon now.
(The replacement edition we found was just slightly off. It has cover art from the same series but has a different publishing logo and is just slightly bigger so that it almost doesn't fit in the box. So it sticks out quite beautifully. lol)

I always return books tat I've borrowed too because it's what I expect :)
I'm really lucky actually that I've never had a problem with books being returned, maybe I only lend them to people that I know will treat them the way that I do lol - I have several friends and we will share the books we really enjoyed between ourselves - so I may lend it to my friend who then lends it to several of her friends or vice versa (with permission) but they always come back to the owner before too long..

Hi there friend!
Yes ren1982 that is exactly how it happens. We book lovers understand how the other feels:)
Nah, they don't understand hints and not hints) It's best to never tell about the book that you read unless it's online)
Why, i went on and on about this great funny series about witch(author Gromico, Belarus), and my distant cousin who lives in another country immediately asked to borrow it. She had a plane in a few hours.
I promised to send her the books. The electronic version. Cause that is what i read. And she could find the paper version cause they are sold in Russia where she had a plane. That was nice.
So, we must keep our favorite books close. Thats all. Have a nice day and hope to see you around)

I could tell you a dozen book borrowing stories that have happened to me down through the years. 'Oh ya, I will get it back to you;' 'Oh, I so agree with you! I would never do that!' Ya, right! I just don't lend out my books anymore. I will tell folks all kinds of options in getting a book if they like it but I just don't lend them out anymore. I never barrow boooks, well rarely, because I might forget. I know that about myself and I would hate to have it done to me so why do it to someone else?

I always return books on time whenever I brrow from someone- they don't even need to ask me all the time to return it. So I expect other people to return what they've borrowed from me too. But there was this one time a teacher borrowed my book (Around the World in 80 days), I loved that book but I never got it back...

Its always the favorite books... You like them and comment on them, and they ask to read it. And thats' that...
I assume you felt embarrassed to ask for that book back. The teacher must have returned it - after all he is a teacher, it is up to him to show example.

I've hardly ever borrowed books, but when I did I always returned them. I used to lend out my books to friends, but after losing a few, I really slowed down on that. I'd have books out to several friends at a time and couldn't remember who had what. I'd also forget that I'd loaned one out and then when I looked for it, it was gone and I had no idea who had it.

Thats what happen when you have to many books. We have about 600 books, and we have lost some really good old books over time because most time we don't remember who took them - you tend to count on the borrowers honesty and if they fail you then that is that.
I wonder how you manage refuse them. It's hard, even neighbors all the time ask for books, but they return:DF I guess they want to borrow again:DD
Have a nice day ))

Book lovers will treasure their books. So whether borrow or lent, we will return and expect the same decency to have our books returned too. Do unto others as you would others do to you should be a basic principle. I have had books (favorites) not returned and it is not a nice feeling. Somehow there is some doubt if you should lend the person who did not return another book. I will try to return as soon as possible, and if i really like the book i borrowed, i won't mind buying or borrowing from a public library. That way, sure must return or be fined $$$.

Hello tiffnkeat. You will expect that the other who loves that book as much as you will be more understanding and will return it, i myself am to lazy for library, and besides now to can find nearly any book online. But the new books that aren't yet online are hard to find.
It seems true book lover understands the value of the book and returns quickly)
Have a nice day!

I will return the book without any doubts. Because it does belong to you, you should feel lucky that people lend such a good book to you, don't you? So don't be hesitate to return the books, if you like it very much you can borrow it then. Anyway it is your responsbility.

My father used to loan out books all the time. He would write his name on the inside cover or first blank page. He would also make a note of who he loaned the book to. Funny thing about this is the one time I loaned HIM a book, he passed it along to someone else, who passed it along to someone else. I had a heck of a time getting it back, but I did.
I tend not to loan books out because I'm afraid I won't get them back. I have had people asked me to loan them a book when I am finished reading it but I haven't done it because I'm afraid I won't get it back - especially if the book is special to me, like autographed by the author.
I will loan out books that I don't care if I get them back or not. If I borrow a book I will always give it back, unless the person tells me they don't want it back.
My sister borrowed a book from a friend recently. She loved the book and didn't want to give it back. She was kind of disappointed when her friend asked for the book back. Funnily enough, I gave the exact same book to my sister for her birthday so she was thrilled.

I think that it is very important to keep promises and return books if I borrow them. If I think they are particularly useful, I will purchase a copy of my own so that I can return the one I've borrowed. I tend not to borrow them or anything else too often these days. _Derek

Well, I am guilty of not returning a book. However, its only one book and I know that the person who lend me the book does not need it anymore. But still, I feel kind of guilty not returning it. Perhaps when I have the time, I will surely return the book. It has been with me for 6 months already.

If that book doesn't belong to me, I definitely will try to return it as soon as I finished it. I just don't understand some people why would they intend to keep somebody else property while they knew pretty well that doesn't belong to them. That is thief, and scam. I won't do such thing to my friends though.

Yes. I do return anything that I borrow not just books. You see even though these are things that can be replaced by a new one, nothing will replace a prized possession especially if its your favorite.
I never liked people who do not return what they borrow be it a small thing. The problem with others is they don't know the value of that object.
What I do is let them know that I'm still waiting for them to return whatever it is they borrowed from me. And I ask them point blank if they still want to return it or not or if they have lost it and give them a specific time until when they can return it. Otherwise, I will never lend them anything in the future.

Books will always be a portal of magic between the author/s and the readers. When someone borrows a book and gets mesmerized the moment he/she has the book, chances are great of the book NOT returning to the owner.
When I borrow a book, I always make sure that it returns to the owner the way I borrowed it; no markings, no coffee spills, and no no folded or missing pages.
