My Personal computer is hardly three years old ... i never changed any of its hardware components until now.
With the kinda PC's available in market these days --- mine looks more of a puppy than anything else ...technology changes so fast huuuuh!
Thats why i have decided to turn my cute puppy into a beast machine which works super fast --- with 4GB RAM,i better not change my processor... i do not see any necessity to swap the existing one,Get one hard disk of one tera byte...excluding one external HD of 500 GB which has been stuffed with hundreds of movies
How about you ? Do you own a puppy or a beast ? You got any plans to transform your small puppy into a beast which does things for you in no time?
Are you one of those who fear to pamper your puppy ... as you have limited knowledge about computer's internal goodies ?

I have a small puppy yet I have no plans to change it in the future. I am actually very glad to have my puppy, because for a while I had no computer at all, so compared to no computer a puppy is definitely a good thing.

LOL! But I actually LIKE fierce dogs ... they tend to act like puppies with me anyway, though.

hiya Sunny!
hope you are well and in good health!
nice topic, and something that i can relate to right now....because i recently just got myself a Alienware m17x...! woooohoooo.....16GB RAM, solid-state hybrid HDD and 2GB CUDA graphics card are among the specs that i have now... i guess that makes what i have now a huge drooling beast! hehe...
since i'm now fully immersed in design & animation work, this beast is really really helping me be mobile while on the job

And yet with such a powerful beast he still can't find the time to be on here, even for a short period of time each week.

I have a superpuppy. Super in the sense that it works a lot time better than it could pass with. You see it's as old as my membership here, though I got it much later. Has even gone blind but still it's my little cute puppy
Once I upgrade it to something else, it'll surely go out of my hands. Same for a new one.

My desktop is also 3 years old and has already 4 Gb RAM. I use it only to play games and I don't intend to change it -- maybe I will buy an external HDD --. I am surfing mainly with a 1 Gb RAM netbook with a Linux OS, and I will probably replace it by another one : long ago, in the MSDOS period, I learned that small is beautiful. I have recently looked for some old DOS command line software to emulate in my phone with DosBox : I remembered that in the 90's, when RAM was expensive, a lot of software were using the HDD to work, and they are perfect today for a phone. They work like a snail, but they can do jobs impossible to do differently with my 32 Mb of RAM, like resizing a 8 megapixel jpeg image taken with my camera to email it. Speed is pleasant but not always necessary for all computing platforms.

My PC is not a beast, but neither a puppy. That's not a problem anyway, it works as it should so there is no real need to change anything.
I've recently buyed a laptop that is more like a beast, I have still to tune it so it can get the maximum speed.
About your beast, why not change the proccesor? It's the core and main component of the whole system. Think that the computer works as a whole, it's useless to have tons of memory if you don't have enough processor to use it, or the best video card with little memory, it must be a balanced choice of components to get the best of each, else you're wasting something.
If you really want a BEAST, upgrade everything to the top. Say, 8GB RAM, 8 cores I7 procesor, 1TB 10000RPM HDD, 1GB video card, that kind of stuff, all together, gives the best of the best in the world. Upgrading only some things not.
By the way, do you really need that?

Mine is still a little harmless puppy, or maybe kitten. My computer is really slow and i have been using it for more than 5 years! It's still working fine, but i don't have enough RAM in it, so causing the slow performance. I'm thinking of upgrading it, but like u, i won't change the processor because i don't see any sense in changing that, plus it's expensive.

My puppy is like 7-8 years old so your computer is still a beast in my eyes. I'm saving money for a new one and hope I'll get it before the April.

Technology changes fast... Moore's law started up back in the 60s, saying that computer power would double, every 18 months... it's been sticking to that, ever since, and this is why I always have to get the most powerful computer everytime I need to pick up a new one. My last one I kept for about 6 years, and just got a new one after Christmas. It's in Intel i7 chip at 2.93mhz, I have 16 gigs of DDR3 ram, 2 Radeon 6800 video cards, giving me over 2 gigs of video ram, a 2tb hard drive, with space for more drives in the future, because I'll need them, and a blu ray burner. It's really an awesome computer, but I know, come about 5 more years, I'll have to be picking up a new one, even if I keep this one's power up.

I probably have a grizzly bear in terms of computing power. I upgrade my parts whenever I feel like it and it is like a hobby for me. I also build PCs for friends and family whenever the need arises.
If someone's interested, here are the specs:
CPU: C2Q q9650 @ 3,6GHz (Cooled by Xigmatek S1283 RS)
GFX: ATi HD4870x2
RAM: 4Gb A-Data OC Extreme 800+ @ 900MHz
Mobo: MSI P35 Neo2-FR
HDD: 650Gb (320 + 250 + 80 - all from Seagate)
Case: ThermalTake V9 black + 9 cooling fans
PSU: 1200W Chieftec
All games run well on max (GTA4 even). I like my eye-candy.

Hey, we've still got a 486sx25 which gets used for word processing and printing labels. Doesn't need to do anything else, still does the job it was bought for ! We keep it at a older relatives house where there is no need for anything else. Of course I do have another computer which is a bit more up to date, it was a raging beast when I bought it, now it's just an aging beast, I think most of it's teeth have fallen out :(

I own a decent midrange laptop. I manage to play some games on it, although not in high settings. I'm planning on buying a new computer soon, a laptop not a desktop. I think the performance of new laptops almot mch that of decent desktops.

I got involved with microcomputers back when we had to build our own to get one. Back when CPM was the operating system -- a few years before IBM entered the market. So I have little fear of them. Now, however, I find that in most cases it is easier and cheaper to simply buy a new computer than to upgrade old equipment. Everything is faster and lighter and has a smaller footprint these days. The curious thing is that now I have less of a personal relationship with the hardware, but am more in tune with web-based stuff. Truly, though, if someone were able to put a barrier between me and the internet, to close off the wall, so to speak, it would surely be like losing an arm.
But my car is like your beast. I plan to just upgrade and/or fix it forever or until it is no longer possible to do so. It is my baby.

Hey sunny! Nice to see ya! Happy New Year dude! I have a brand
new Hewlett Packard Computer and I don't know how many GB's it
has, but it's supposed to be fast! My "computer guy-sort of son"
got it for me but it hasn't left the box yet! I kind of like
my "old one" but it is more like a turtle so I am looking forward
to having a "beast" too! I will let you know what it is when
I know!

I own a Pitbull of a laptop actually. I am very savvy when it comes to computers so am always willing to upgrade to stronger and more powerful.
I do know some people who upgrade and sillies, have not idea where the file tab is., but the sure have my cell number memorized so I can run over and reformat.
I have my laptop connected to my home server, where as I have two other computers networked with the server. Use to be for my line of work and well I got to keep the server and connections. So am very lucky.
I do upgrade as necessary and or as technologically appealing.

I used to have a puppy but then I decided to go Alienware! Of course I didn't buy an alienware computer as that would be extremely expensive. I simply bought the exact same parts that one has and then got a cool, ventilated, LED lit shell. It looks like a real beast and it's amazing for gaming and programming!
