Hey dear mylotters, recently my parents came back from a trip, but unfortunately they both had a cold when they got back and they still have it at this moment. In a few hours they will be going to the doctors, but since they both had it, my brother is having a cold now too. Eventually I'm the only member in the family which isn't, but I feel that my nose is starting to drip a little bit. Any of you have advices for me to keep myself more safe against the cold? It's my last week I'm having holidays, and I would like to be disease-free during these last days... Thanks in advance

I would say stay warm, and get plenty of vitamin C and zinc. Take your vitamins, drink OJ and tea like they are your best friends, and try your best to get 8 hours of sleep every night. If you can do that, you will be okay I think. Good luck staying healthy!

Yeh, the warmth isn't a problem as long as I can stay here in my room. I don't like tea at all, but I can surely try OJ, it has lots of vitamins anyway :) I usually do get the 8 hours of sleep, but that is that I go to sleep at 2am until 10pm, I don't know if that counts as well^^ Thanks for the advices dan, really appreciated. Best wishes.

There are only two reasons why we get sick, either under reaction or over reaction of the immune system. Colds and cough are the result of the immune system's under reaction. It needs to be awakened to perform its job. In my case, I am taking a food supplement classified as immune modulator. When the immune system is weak due to inactivity, it will boost the same to the normal level and in case of over active immune system, it will suppress the immune system activity and bring down to the normal level. It is very effective to me and kept me safe from viruses. Cough and colds has just recently attacked my colleagues and they suffered for more than week with full medication, but I was protected and the virus did not succeed. My family is also using the same and its doing a great job. To live a healthy life, balance is the key.

I see. Your explanation definetly improved my sight within diseases and our immune system. I had no idea that there really were such products with a very good working effect. I'd want to go and look for them but since I have no driving license, and the roads outdoors are still frozen, I'm afraid I'll to do with products I can find in my parents' house. But eventually afterwards I'm definetly going to look for them cause I don't feel like catching a cold too often. Thank you very much for your respons, I wish you a healthy year^^

Usually the winter season is one of the worst times to be getting a cold. I try to be extra careful about washing hands before eating or touching my face, because this is the primary way to catch a cold (through touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with germy fingers). Next, if I start to even feel the slightest scratchy throat or sniffle, I start taking Zicam, which you can buy at Costco (2 bottles for $13) or single bottles at other stores for a higher price. It is a Zinc Gluconate product that you spray on your throat (don't drink or eat for 15 minutes after spraying), and repeat every 3 hours. This is truly the ONLY cold remedy that helps me prevent my colds, or at least, if I get one, its symptoms are far less than they'd be. It works by coating your throat to prevent the virus from multiplying and making you sick with the virus, but the trick is to carry it with you and take it as soon as you feel "anything suspicious." Zicam has helped me from getting endless colds, and all the other stuff that goes with them--runny, stuffy nose, laryngitis, sinus infections, coughs that keep you up all night, etc. Zicam has worked well for me, but you may find a different result. Anyway, it is certainly worth a try.

Hmmm ok here is my idea my friend take more liquid like water, juices and lemon juice. If you have vitamin C take it regularly in order to strengthen your immune system. Actually in a cold there is no specific medicine just only need rest and more liquid and should be having strong immune system to fight any cold virus.. don't talk to them very near at least 3 mtrs to avoid contingious.. see you around

I see, I'm trying to do so, to drink enough and try to receive enough vitamin C, ofcourse as long as the products don't have too many other bad things in them. I also try to avoid contact as much as possible and when seeing them I try to keep a distance, but hey, it's hard to do so with family^^ Thanks for your response though =) All the best, I hope for a healthy year to you my friend^^

For Chinese, we cook the chicken soup with garlic. This soup can recover you from cold very soon. In order to prevent the sickness to spread from one to another of within the same family, normally I shall do the following preventive steps: 1. The sick person should sleep alone in a room. 2. To spray the few times a day to kill the bacteria in the air within the room. 3. Use air purifier with bacteria killing function. 4. Use the mask for the one who get cold. ha! ha! ha! Although I have applied the above preventive steps to my family, sometimes we were still infected the cold too without knowing the reason. Just try it.

Fortunately for me, i have not caught colds for the past 2 years, not even flu. At home, my in-laws and my husband and my daughter (when she comes home for semestral breaks or vacation)would usually catch a cold or they get it from among themselves. But i luckily , do not get them. And to think that i share the bed with my husband and even cuddle up with him when we sleep. I guess, my taking Vitamin C everyday for 1000 mg, plus my always eating spicy foods strengthened my immune system. Yes, i have read that if you like eating spicy foods you will not catch cold easily. Besides i also take other Vit. E, Calcium and B1, B6 & B12. They help me to be colds and flu free!

when the patients cough, sneeze and talk, the pathogens will spread through the air.You might as well fumigate the room with lactic acid.

You'd better drink more water, don't use the same cup or plate your parents used to, if it is necessary, just wash it with boiling hot water. Do some exercise like running, walking. Also open the window let air circulate is a way to prevent getting the sickness.

First, in order to avoid being sick, you should be healthy. Eat the right foods and exercise well. By doing these your body would work properly. You should also take vitamins to protect yourself from viruses. Your immune system should be strong. In order to prevent yourself from getting sick from other people, you should not use the things that the sick person is using. Like the glass that is using by the sick person because there is a possibility that the virus would be transferred to you.

I can relate. I have some tips that you might want to take advantage of. First, try to limit your exposure to sick people. I used to always ask if people were sick before coming over to limit the exposure. Second, if you can't limit the exposure you may want to have everyone take off their coats from outside and keep them in a sick room and have everyone wash their hands when they come in. You also should ask them to use hand sanitizer on their hands often. Third, ask them to cover their mouth when sneezing. Fourth, don't sit in close proximity to people who are sick. Even after doing all that, there is no guarantee that you won't get sick. Another thing that I have done to prevent others from getting sick in my household is wear a mask that you can buy at the pharmacy. In fact, I was very ill and no one in my house became ill because I used the mask all the time. Happy New Year everyone!

I think increasing your immune system by doing excersise regularly and consuming healthy foods and vitamins are the best way to prevent us from getting sick. And definitely practicing healthy habitual in your life like washing your hands before eating, sleeping minimum 8 hours a day, etc can really make your daily fresh. Have a nice day.
