Oh, the things my dogs will eat!

My stepmother's new year tradition is to eat pork and sauerkraut for good luck. She's in her 80's and her family has done that as far back as she can remember. So I always go over on new year's day to share the meal with her and my father--she is a fantastic cook!
Well, I never really liked sauerkraut but this year I made a real effort and found that I enjoyed it. She sent some home with me and knew that I probably would not eat much of it but see if Gus and Cookie liked it--they always send home a bag of frozen scraps for my dogs!
That night at their dinnertime, I offered my two dogs a bit of the sauerkraut and they loved it! For two nights their dinners were heaped with sauerkraut and they thought they were in heaven! Unfortunately, it's all gone now and once again their treat is green beans but that's alright because they eat those like candy.
Have you discovered any foods lately that you are surprised that your dogs or cats like? They certainly have some strange tastes!

My dogs will eat pretty much anything, providing that it is either mixed with something else, or fed to them whilst they are all together. In both cases, I think it hits the bottom of their stomach before they realised what they are eating!
Occasionally I run out of dog food, in which case I will cook up a big pan of pasta or rice and mix it with whatever cooked veggies or leftovers that we have and a good slug of olive oil. It may not be ideal nutritionally, but it keeps their hunger pangs at bay until I replenish stocks of dog food!

Hiya dragon,
Not now but my last Dog an Alsation used to love Porridge Oats nice and warm and then curl up on his mat in the Kitchen right by the Oven I used to keep on a lot because of the intense cold in England.
He loved Cornflakes too and Weetabix never affected him he loved and he also eat normally the other Dog Food.

I had another friend from England mention porridge the other day! We call it oatmeal and don't make it with as much milk as you do but Gus and Cookie love it, especially when I give them some of mine that has raisins, dates and walnuts in it. I think they like the warm cereal on these cold mornings, especially since I keep the house at 66° so it's a bit chilly.
Your dog sounds as if it was pampered a bit and deserved it! What a cozy picture you have painted!

Hiya dragon,
Yes we still call it Porridge from the times we went to School being very small and having it for Breakfast Monday to Friday where would I be without that Porridge?
Our Dog was spoiled just a little bit not too much though. He was a Dog that lived for activity and he used to go to work with my Husband when he was a Security Guard and he was a very good Security Guard Dog no one ever taught him what to do he just did things by himself. He would patrol around the Factories and was very clean too. He once got the Maintenance Men on top of a Machine that was very high. They said they were really scared of him which was very funny as he would never attack he would bark for my Husband to see what was there and ask them what they were doing there. They were there unofficially it seems so he did a good Job there.
You paint a nice cozy picture of yours too I like it Raisins and Walnuts in the Oatmeal too.
All our Dog ever used to do was to forewarn my Husband of marauders on the Premises and my Husband did the rest. He did have to chase a few People off and all thanks to our Dog.
Have a great New Year 2011 dragon. Hugs. Sue.xxx

I was really surprised at the sauerkraut, as it is vinegary.
Are you sure your dogs don't need something good to chew? I order bully sticks for my dogs and they are in heaven for hours! They've quit chewing on sticks they find outside and I can leave the trash can in the kitchen when I leave rather than moving it to the enclosed porch.

Broccoli is a favorite here, too! Cookie won't eat olives but Gus will and they both love salsa, especially the Sam's Club salsa with corn and black beans. Yummy!! I'll spoon some over their dry dog food as a treat and it's very good for them, too.
I thought cats were very picky?! I guess I was wrong!

ha ha, my three year old son told me yesterday to get a dog for him, I asked him what you want a dog? he answered I need a small dog for holding and playing, Oh he needs a puppy. I asked him, you are going to school and me, your brother and father will also go to their respective places in morning then who will take care of that dog in day time. His innocent reply came; I will feed the dog before going to school.
No, dear first of all we are living on rent and not enough space in our house secondly nobody at home in day time (as both of us are working).

I, in turn, wish you a wonderful new year of happy new beginnings!
My house would be very empty without my dogs. As much as they sometimes irritate me with their begging when I'm eating or wanting to play when I am tired, they bring life to the house and comfort to me. There is always someone ready to cuddle with me or comfort me. Before my dogs, even having a fish in the house was better than nothing. Have you thought of getting a pet to liven up your home?

One of my girls LOVES raw potatoes. I found this out quite by surprise one day. I had put my large bag of potatoes on the kitchen floor after removing some of them so the bag was open. I didn't think anything of it since my dogs never bothered them before but this time, well, I learned that I can't EVER keep the potatoes where she can get them.
I found partially eaten potatoes all over the house! She had grabbed one and took it to one spot, began eating it, then got another one and took it to another spot, etc. etc. I found at least six partially eaten potatoes!
Now, whenever I'm preparing potatoes to eat, she's right there at my feet, begging for one.
Both of the girls also love bananas. I cannot eat a banana without them both staring at me and pleading for some. Of course, they always get some. If I'm ever feeling lonely, all I need to do is start eating a banana and I have my two favorite fuzzy little people with me.

Gus loves the raw potatoes, too! Weren't you the one who was growing her own potatoes last year?
Gus and Cookie come in handy the rare times I eat a banana. They each get one end of it but often, Cookie will spit hers out and Gus gets a double treat!
I haven't seen you around lately, are you doing okay?

Yep, I was growing potatoes last year. The year before, though, I was growing blue, purple, red, yellow and white potatoes but they didn't do well at all. (Too much rain.) Then, last year, we had that awful drought and high temps that killed everything I had out there. Hopefully, this year, I'll get a decent crop of potatoes, along with everything else. Wish I could grow bananas. I have dwarf banana plants but I've had them for years and they've never produced any bananas.
Anyway, I'm not around much these days. I've been so very depressed since last summer, mostly after my husband yelled at me for using a tiny bit of water so my fruit trees wouldn't die. I was working so hard to keep everything alive and even using gray water but once he said what he said, I got so depressed I just gave up. I haven't been able to get motivated since then. Then, when I needed that surgery on my neck in November, that added to the depression because I'm so sick of always needing surgeries. I didn't even get a Christmas tree this year, aside from my little Charlie Brown Christmas tree. No one came over. That was by my request since I got sick the Wednesday before and I just couldn't handle all the preparations and cooking. Everybody seems to want something from me lately but no one is offering anything in return. I'm sure you know how that can get to a person every once in awhile.
Ah, life. I'm hoping that Springtime will bring a renewed energy and motivation my way.

Porridge, oatmeal, farina--they love cereal! They especially liked it the one time I splurged on steel cut oats.

We once had a terrier that would eat anything that we ate. She loved salads. We no longer have a dog. Now we have a house cat who only eats the expensive dry food that we have to buy from the vet. That's not completely true. When he can catch them, he also eats bugs. The good thing about this cat's diet is that he does not beg for food from the table. The only time he might even get up on the table is if there were a bug flying around there.

My dogs love salads, too! Even without the dressing they will eat tomatoes, lettuce and other salad things. Cookie catches any flies buzzing around and beetles outside! Still, they beg from the table. I think it's just their instinct. Cookie will even chase down mice--she caught one when we moved in and I haven't seen any since--and has her heart set on the wily squirrels!

Cookie is rather picky and will give her banana to Gus but if one of my sons is visiting (I'm surprised how well she remembers them!) she will eat literally anything they give her! Dogs just want to please!

Your cat is beautiful! My dog Gus also licks dishes that have nothing in them--I think animals have such sensitive taste buds that they can taste something where we see nothing.

Hello dragon54u,
You would be surprised to know the things my dog will eat!
Not only sauerkraut, but pickles, oranges, parsley, cabbage and even lemons.
I haven't discovered yet something she wouldn't eat. Of course she doesn't get everything on the list every day, but when I cook, she wants a little bit of everything I put in the pot. (luckily, I rarely cook, as my partner is the one who usually cook, and he doesn't give her odd things to eat, like I do)

Oh, pickles!! I occasionally get some little hamburgers from a place called White Castle, they're very small, and although the dogs get a little pinch from the last burger they love the pickles the most! I don't like those particular types of pickles but they do!
My dogs won't eat lemons but I'm sure they'd eat lemon cookies or cake. They don't get sweets but they'll pick up the crumbs I spill when I have them. Dogs are so funny!

We have two dogs at my house. Shisha marie( a black lab) and Artie( a begale mix) . Sheha is at times snooty when it comes to trying new foods. Artie will eat just about anything. During the warmer months I found that both dogs love to eat Ice cubes. We reward them to them after doing a trick . If your dogs like it , I am shure you will save money rewarding them with it.

Have you tried freezing yogurt cubes for the summer months? My dogs love them! They have to eat them outside, of course, but it keeps them busy for a few minutes. I used to freeze yogurt in a Kong along with vegetables and that kept them busy for hours. Amazingly, it never thawed on the rug because they were constantly licking it!

Dogs eat almost anything they can get their paws on I have found. Although my dog was extremely picky. My dog a big golden retriever was unpredictable with food and yes he would eat almost anything he could get his paws on. I have found that goldens are the ones you have to watch when it comes to their interest in food, but of course I can't speak about all other breeds.
Happy New Year!
