Refurbished computers

I will be getting a new used computer soon. Some may ask how that could be? I buy them off the internet for a cheaper price than the newer computers. So far hubby and I have owned five different computers that were refurbished and have had very good luck with them. We tend to stick to the same retailer when we buy a "new" refurbished computer. I guess it is partially due to the fear that we will get burned by an unknown company and also because we feel that the service we received from these companies has been so good that we are repeat customers. A person can get a refurbished computer with good specifications for about half the price of a new computer and they are advertised as being good as new. We only ever had to return one computer because there was a defect on it that would not allow software to load. Overall, I would suggest this route to anyone who needs a decent computer and doesn't have a lot of money for one.

cool! When you're saying refurbished computer, you mean the whole computer, or you buy refurbished parts from different suppliers? This sounds nice, I want to give it a try. Can you give me links to where I can browse for refurbished parts?

The whole computer is refurbished. The places that we like to frequent are techforless.com, refurbdepot.com,tigerdirect.com and compusa.com. In the past we have had good success with the computers from them and they also sell computer parts as well as other computer accessories.

I so agree with you as it really depends on what we use them for. May I ask which company you use as if one day my laptop breaks down I will not be able to afford a brand new one for time to come. So it sounds like you have been very fortunate with the company you use. So if you do not mind sharing that I would greatly appreciate it. Also my boyfriends little one visits us from England for a full month and I do not want her touching my laptop so a refurbished one would come in handy. Thanks in advance.

Refurbished computers are actually really good and cheap if you get them from the right place. I've actually purchased one from Overstock for around $400 and I have to say that it was one of the best deals I've ever gotten. The computer was an HP but everything was in order and I've had it for 3 years now without it causing any problems. At first I was kind of skeptical about buying a refurbished item because I was afraid that I might get ripped off but I'm glad that I was wrong in the end. I'm positive that I'd buy from them again when I need another computer.

I think that this is a very good idea especially when you know what you are doing and have a good insight into the inner workings of a computer. I took a course in computer maintenance and installation and I carry out all my own maintenance on my pc. I'm also in the process of building a computer from scratch, I'm slowly buying all the parts that I need. I may keep the computer for myself or sell it on ebay, it's something to think about. I can understand where you are coming from though in terms of not wanting to be taken advantage of by a dodgy company. I love all things computer! I think there are a few websites out there that specialise in refurbished computers. Anyway, it sounds like you have been lucky in what you have achieved thus far. Andrew

Hi, Linda. Refurbished computers are also reliable as the new ones only if you are dealing with an honest seller or installer. I have a computer at home that I have not use for over three years now. my hubby got a new one but last month it broke so we asked someone to have it fixed. The guy told us that all we need to do is change the hard drive so we did.The computer is working like new now. Because of this incident, we came up with an idea that we will buy a new hard drive for my old computer than buying a new one. Which will save us a lot of dough.

What a good suggestion. I have always had my concerns about buying refurbished computers. How do you know that the computer you are purchasing is in good working order? Does it come with a warranty? What are the return policies? I think it is a good option for people who don't have the money to spend on new computers. These days people can get a new netbook simply by upgrading their plan, renewing their cell phone agreement. I just did and received a brand new netbook for pennies on the dollars. Sometimes you have to think out of the box when you are in dire straits. Happy New Year

The sites that I buy from are satisfaction guaranteed and usually have a one year warranty on them. You have the option to purchase extended coverage if you so wish. I just got my "new" computer for less than 245.00 and shipped within two days to me and it has a twelve month warranty and twelve months parts and labor plus comes with the windows xp pro software and an antivirus that is free for six months. This was bought through CompUSA and I used Mr. Rebates to receive 4% cash back on my offer. You can request a check or paypal through them when your account reaches ten dollars and they give you a five dollar signup bonus so when this goes through, I will be eligible for a check for $13.49 if I so wish or a paypal payment.

Well, as a person who has worked in a computer company, I usually don't recommend refurbished computers, as they're basically computers that went wrong in the first stages of their life and were repaired and sold cheaper again. That's why they are so cheap. With the repair they're supposed to work correctly, so there shouldn't be any problem, but the experience told me that many of them end up failing again. I'm glad the refurbished computers you have owned worked correctly
