Saving energy

Hi every one,i was driving to work today and when i stop my car on red signal,i realize that some one in front of me has turned off his engine just for couple of minutes or may be less than that,i never thought about that since today,2 minutes every day will be total 1 hour in a month time,it could be less than that but still saving a good few money,so did you ever think about that relating to all energy products and did you ever turn off unnecessary lights?

I would definitely NOT do that. First of all - how long do the lights stay red ovecr there? I think that's silly, unless the lights take like an hour to change (which is highly unlikely). I think this would probably do more damage to your car than anything - turning it off and then on again at every light. Whatever money you save in gas you will probably have to spend in three-fold to get the car fixed for all of this turning on and off. That would be my guess. I should ask my pops, who is an automechanic. I have heard of people putting their car into NEUTRAL at red lights or when they're idling, though, which I guess saves gas without the trouble and possible damage caused by turning your car off at every light.

Well i am with you and you made a very good point, but when i goes to work and there is a big signal and i know that usually take me at least 2mins and i seen regular driver who use that road turned off the engine, but not at all the signal because normally small signals would not stay red for long time.....

maybe turning engine for 2 minutes is something but is not so necessary if you want to save energy you turn some applictions that indeed consumes very much energy like pc,notebook,TV,lights...etc.And at car to turn engine for 2 minutes i think that is not so recommended.;)

There are some cars on the road these days that switch off automatically as soon as you take your foot off the throttle. They start back up again once you put your foot down & take off very smoothly & immediately. There was an article about it maybe over two decades ago that I remember reading. Ordinarily, switching off your engine only to start it again two minutes later would actually use more fuel than if you just let the bugger idle! If it were a railway crossing & you were stuck there for five or more minutes, then it might be worth it, but still not save much money or emissions. If you really want to save money whilst idling, get a diesel - they have the lowest emissions at idle than just about anything. Welcome to My Lot
