Ok we were watching Taboo tonight on the National Geographic Channel. They were talking about being overweight in society. A mother in another country was trying to get her daughter to eat. If she didn't eat she punished her by putting the lower part of her foot between two sticks then squeezing it. I told my husband it can't really hurt can it? Well we got our son who volunteered to see if it hurt and yep it does... Has anyone ever tried this at home?

I have never tried that and I imagine it hurts a lot as feet are full of small bones. But each culture has it´s own ways and what seems cruelty to a culture is the way to do it in another.
I was taken to this post because I was reading a post about eating rice with the hand. I would never do it in my culture, but in another it is probably ok. I remember many decades ago, my first encounter with a restaurant of another ethnia. A friend of mine had been in the Middle East and took me to a restaurant where we sat on the floor, a waiter came to wash our hands and we had to eat with our right hand. It was difficult for me as I´m left handed, but I was told that it couldn´t be done with the other. By the way, the diner was delicious and it was my first encounter with couscous
I did not see that show you mention, but I would have to know why did the mother do that and what did it mean.

The mother was trying to get her daughter to drink milk, mixed with powdered milk, and butter. In their culture being thin did not look right so she was a disgrace to the family. The little girl was only 7-8 years old. She didn't want to drink anymore so she would shove the bowl away. It was only a few seconds when she would squeeze the foot between the sticks but it was enough for the little girl to slap the sticks away.
