When I first got a dog, I didn't know what on earth to do with it. I went out and bought the dog whisperer series. And to be honest, I can't say that it helped much. Did it help you out a lot more in understanding dog behavior etc....and how? Maybe I'll go back and re-read them.

If you're talking about the books by Ceasr Milan(I know of no one else who is referred to as The Dog Whisperer) I've only read one of his books but watched his shows many times. I can assure you that his techniques do work. I believe you can learn more from his shows than from his books because on the shows you can watch him put his techniques into action. One important thing you learn from Cesar is that dogs, unlike people, don't understand or show emotions. They simply react to energy. If we are excited or stressed in some way then dogs will react accordingly. They often react in an excited or stressful manner themselves. That's why Cesar always emphasizes that we should always train and interact with dogs in a calm-assertive manner. Also, dogs are pack animals. In the wild they always run and live in packs. There will always be one dominant dog or leader of the pack. The rest will be followers. This helps to ensure the survival of the pack. As a pet they must see you as the leader. If not, then they will try to be the dominant one. Hey, I could go on and on about what I have learned from Cesar's shows. His techniques do work and there is nothing magical about it. It's just a matter of understanding what makes dogs tick and then having the patience and determination to make it work. If the books haven't helped I would suggest you watch his shows. If you can't get his shows where you live you should be able to buy his videos online.

Thanks a lot. Unfortunately I am probably one of the last of a dying breed that doesn't have cable so I can't watch his shows. I do have both of his books however and have attempted to read them. I guess I will go back and finish them to see whether I can implement these techniques and perhaps new ones that he recommends. But thanks so much for all the info. Very helpful.
