My 3 month old border collie is really scared of cars! But not only cars all other kinds of sounds, even more if she doesn't see what is making the noise. What should I do about it? Has your dog ever been scared of cars?

My dog which passed away a few years was always terrified of noises, no matter what noise it was. We used to live in duplex maybe about 6 years ago and our neighbors from upstairs apparently while we weren't in the house during business hours, would make louds noises that terrified my dog more than what she was originally. When I would come home there would be poop and pee everywhere and some of the time I would even find her in the window cell scratching the window hoping that she could get out. The ultimate must have been during in a thunderstorm in the middle of night, apparently she found herself in the house in the dark when to kitchen and tried to stick her small head under the dishwasher, but apparently when she pulled out her was stock with the wiring and she pulled out her eye from the socket. Luckily the Vet was able to fix it, even though she stayed with some permanent vision problems. After that incident the vet prescribed her some relaxing pills, which helped her out alot, she was still a bit jumpy at times, but more relaxed. I honestly don't know what causes dogs to be scared of noises, I wish I knew.

I think a dog normally hunts on smaller animals in nature. The prey makes a silent sound and the dog tries to hear it. When she hears the sound she will go attack the prey. Now then you have cars. They make an enormous amount of sounds. The dog hears them and thinks she is being hunted by a very strong animal. She doesn't see the car as a prey I guess because it is so big. Then of course the dog gets scared of the car. Wouldn't you be if you are a small dog?

Well ofcourse, but all dogs differ. At the time that this was occuring I currently had to small Shitzu's. My other dog was completely different and mind you she was alot smaller than the one that got hurt. But she wasn't afraid of anything, no noise, she would literally sleep through a hurricane and nothing would bother her. My vet told my dad, that dog's differ it all depends, but my dog that I was describing to you above was afraid of everything and I felt so bad for her, but no matter what we did nothing would calm her down. She finally calmed down when we moved out of the duplex and into a single family home, I guess because there wasn't so much traffic or noise in the area, she actually had time to relax.

The way it is applicable to dogs,so its applicable to man...the first day,a new person enters an aeroplane,he gets so scared but as time goes on,he gets use to it.if your dog is do afraid of cars, try making it stay around sounds....consistently for almost close to a week and it will get use to it.My dogs are trained by me.My compund is fenced and i had a dog that when its sleeping neughbours or anyone dont make noise...but the moment sounds are made...it wakes up angry and confront whereever the sound is coming from.if it is children...it will chase them far away.you dont help your dog by taking it away from sound...how will it learn to adhere to it and how long will you continue hiding it from sound...make it get use to it,if possible tie it down near in coming sound....he will dioscover itself that sounds dont hurt.

That's probably a good thing. It means that she probably won't get hit by one. I don't really know what you can do.
