I've yet to see the film 'Babe' but it does appeal to me, I must admit. Such a shame the creator D!ck King-Smith has died, aged 88. The best quote is as follows:- He said of his work: "Much as I love The Wind In The Willows and the works of Beatrix Potter, I never dress my animals in clothes ... They behave as animals should behave, with the exception that they open their mouths and speak the Queen's English." Isn't that great? I can't copy and paste the article because MyLot doesn't accept the name D!ck in the title. Grrr!

I thought Babe was very cute, I was really taken with the old man who played the human lead in the movie and the place it was filmed was just BEAUTIFUL!

Depending on when the original was made I really do think I saw that and not the remake as I don't normally like remakes of anything..and I was VERY young..sometime in the 70s? Would that be the original? Hope so cos it was ace!

Well, I shall take your word for it as I've never seen it. I've seen Charlotte's Web though which had a pig in it..read the book too and it made me cry..just like Watership Down. I went to see both films at the cinema and had to hide my face, I was crying that much!! Silly Moo that I am! I've also seen that ace Disney film called "An Incredible Journey" on television. It had a cat and two dogs in it, if I remember rightly. I cried during that as well, oh, and not forgetting "Lassie Come Home!"

I used to love his books. much preferred Martins Mice and Daggy Dogfoot and Saddlebottom over The Sheep Pig though. I never quite understood why that was the one that got made into a film. was the Fox Busters by him too? about chickens fighting back against foxes, and they all had names they'd read off farm machinery and feed packaging. I loved the farminess of his books. they were all part of a world I knew.

Yes, I believe Fox Busters was one of his. I'm ashamed to say I've never read his books but I'm glad you have enjoyed them.

That is sad to hear Janey. Even I liked watching Babe and was particularly impressed with the way real animals were used. It was very clever the way they got limp-sinc also. But at 88, it's not bad. If I am still alive at 88, I think I will be quite pleased. But there again, are we ever really ready to leave this world and what we have created in it? _Derek

I don't really like the idea of living a long time. I worry about the state of the world..lack of food, etc. Bundle of laughs, me!!

Well let us remember the guy of the good things that he contributed in this world. I bet this guy will live forever. And this is possible because of his works. Rest in peace.

Awwh this is the first of hear of his passing.. I so liked this film and the piggy. Age 88, well he lived a full and plentiful life. I wish him eternal peace. Thanks for the information and I am heading over to the myLot news blogs as they always post news articles there about such news like this.

I really wish I'd known the guy, he sounds like a person who obviously loves animals..probably the first animal behaviourist of his day. I love the idea that he didn't like his animals to wear clothes..I don't like that either!

For someone at 88 to go and still produce movies like he did in his later years is quite something - I watched the movie Babe again the other week and still enjoyed it. At least he had a full innings.

he didn't make films. he was an author. he wrote, among many other rather brilliant childrens books, a book called The Sheep Pig. this was made into a film, which I found somewhat Americanised and lacking in charm, but it was successful.
