Why don't more people move to Florida?

I am surprised that Florida does not have more residents than it does! When I see all of the cold weather up north every winter, I ask myself: Why would anyone endure that frozen misery? Today is January 5th, and the high was 76 in my part of South Florida! Not only do we have great weather, but we also have a great cultural mix that allows us to sample many different foods from local restaurants. I know to each his own is the expression. My feeling is that life is too short, why spend 25% percent of it cold and miserable. If your in the process of moving down here, please let me know why you are on your way!

You also have humidity in the summer and alligators and hurricanes. You do not have changing seasons. I would love to visit, but I need to be in Kansas or Oklahoma.

I know, and Oklahoma and Kansas get humid as well. Tornadoes have been recorded in every state in the union, so you may see one some day. I will never see a hurricane. Tornadoes usually come, and then they are gone. I do not even remember the last time I had to go to the 'fraidy hole. (As my granny used to say.) If we all moved to Florida it would just be too crowded.

Hurricanes hit anywhere from Texas, to the eastern seaboard. Miami hasn't been hit by a major hurricane since 1992. To me Louisiana gets hit harder than any other state. I have been to Kansas and Oklahoma, the twisters you get over there scare me more than any hurricane.

Alligators aren't really the problem that they are made out to be. If a person happens to see one, they simply report it to the fish and wildlife office.

Some people, like myself, like the cold. I enjoy the many things that I can do in the winter months. I like to snowshoe, ice fish, make snowmen and things like that. Also I like to sit and watch the logs in the fireplace burn sending out many shapes with their flames. It is so cozy. I am not big on the heat but do enjoy visiting different places that has warmer weather. I have been to Florida and liked it. But it is not a place that I want to live.

I am glad you like the cold! I was just wondering why more people don't move down here! When it's a cold day up north, so many whinners get on twitter to say how depressed they are, and how the cold sucks! Why do those people stay up there? If you enjoy the fireplace, then you are where you belong. Happy new year, and have fun. That ice fishing actually sounds interesting.

I hope a lot of people move to Florida, especially from Colorado. That would mean that I'd have more of Colorado for myself! You might crow about 76 degrees in the winter, but I can crow about it in the summer, when you're stuck inside breathing air conditioning fumes.
And who says cold is miserable? We had the most beautiful snow fall right after Christmas. Most of the Christmas lights were still up and in the evening it was like a fairy wonderland. You can't sled in the beach sand and you can't ice skate except maybe in a fake ice rink. Life is much too short to spend with no variety of temperature and seasons. :)

Well, we can ski here, too, on the snow. I can't see anyone sledding in the ocean. ;) Or ice skating or building snowmen or having snowball fights for that matter.
Grand Junction is a tiny part of Colorado. There are places here where it never gets that hot and even where it does, the humidity isn't 99%. I sweated enough in Singapore... humidity is nasty stuff.
It's a good thing not everyone loves Florida like you do, though. Have you ever thought of what would happen if we'd all move down there?? What a mess that would be!

Really, I use to live in Grand Junction when I was a teen! I remember highs in the low 100's back in the 1990's. In the summer we never get over 96 down here.
You Ski on the snow, but don't hit a tree! I'll jet ski in Key West or Miami Beach and try not to hit the wakes to hard!
Life is good in Florida, have a happy new year!

My thoughts exactly!! I went down from Oklahoma for vacation in Orlando last September. It was beautiful, fun, and warm!! I loved it and considered moving there very briefly...then winter came. Frozen roads, heaps of snow...nope. Im moving!! I will be moving to Orlando with my best friend (who has never been) in late July/early August...specific date hasn't been chosen yet. I can't wait to be there and to enjoy life every day, because Im tired of being snowed in and having nothing to do even on warm days. Yay for living life the way it was meant to be lived!!

We will be glad to have you in our fine state. Life is great down here. I just got back from Miami Beach, wow what a trip! Even if you don't have much money, you will be rich with a wealth of great winter weather. Summer is hot everywhere, so why not live life to the fullest in sunny Florida.

I understand! I have family in California, so I know the feeling. We use video chat to stay in touch. As for jobs, I would only come down here from up north as long as I knew a job was waiting for me. Good Luck to you in 2011!

I wouldn't want to live in Florida because I wouldn't want to be that close to the ocean. All of those crazy storms that blow in.. no thanks

Yeah, I understand! I thought most of the U.S gets "crazy storms though. You must be in one of those nice quiet pockets of the country that never gets hit by tornados, floods, or noreasters. Well, life is an adventure and I think it's fun to live in Florida. Time for some Cuban coffee to get the day going. It's better than an energy drink in my opinion!

I was born and raised in New England. We moan about the winter when it's here wishing it was summer and when it's summer and too hot we are wishing for winter. I have no problem with winter. I love bringing my kids sleding and making snowmen with them. It's a great experience that every child deserves (In my own opinion). I want to move to Florida and have wanted to since I was 16. We just cant afford to do so with 4 young children. I have visited twice and loved it there. The storms there are unbelievable. You couldnt get me inside away from the storm, I had to stay outside and watch it.

I have been here since I was 17. I agree, if you have young children it is hard to make the move. I can only say that when I want to see some snow I just watch tv. The snow can be fun for the first day it falls. It's when it stays around for awhile that it becomes a nuisance.

Get your passport and temporary visa ready get a plane ticket and be on your way. Contact the US embassy where you live to find out how to turn a temporary visa into a permenant residency before you leave.

I agree that Florida is a great place to stay in the US, in fact one of my Macedonian friends is staying there and she is considering of becoming a citizen. She told me Florida is a great place to stay. Last December she went to New York and got stranded because of the snow storm. That made her want to go back to sunny Florida!
I wish to visit Florida someday but I'm considering Australia as the place where i would settle.

People don't like the hurricane season, your right? Did you know that Southwest Florida is the least likely area of Florida to get struck by a major hurricane. That is why Thomas Edison built his winter home in Fort Myers.
